New Month, New Winners question
Bob Nichols, Photographer
Tipton | IN | USA | Posted: 11:50 AM on 10.01.10
->> Looking at the winners from last month's clips, is this photo possible?

"Big Brother Google"

As we are looking at the photo, wouldn't the writing be backwards or "mirror-image"? Is there a chance the photo was flipped horizontally?

->> Yes it would have to be unless the person was already looking at a mirrored image and the reflection is flipping it back again.

->> I don't see anything in the rules specifying that it's not allowed to flip photos (or otherwise manipulate the crap out of them, for that matter...).

Maybe it's time to add an ethics policy? Discuss here:

->> I'd strongly be in favor of some basic ethical rules for the contest. However, there are a lot of very strong photo illustrations that have won in the past, this image (assuming there was a flip) included, that do deserve recognition. Perhaps add a photo illustration category?

->> I guess we should ask the photographer before starting an ethics witch hunt on here. Maybe it ran in the paper as a photo illustration?

->> Again, I don't see any "ethics witch hunt" to be had. According to the contest rules, as long as the photographer created the image within the previous month, didn't put his name in the caption, didn't enter it twice (ect., ect.), he did nothing wrong.

->> I'm sure I'll get blasted for this but the whole question of ethics regarding this image is ridiculous. As was stated by Israel - the shot was set up. It is not a news shot and frankly I don't see how it could be mistaken for one. When I look at it I see "conceptual portrait". In my opinion, the only time there should be a question of ethics is regarding a news shot. Ethics aside, I don't think it's a bad idea to add a photo illustration category for shots such as these. It's really not fair to judge a photo like this against a photo journalism shot.

I was actually just trying to stir the pot with the photo used. Virtually the same photo, used in an editorial context.
