Mark III + 300mm f/4L not getting 10fps

->> Hello,
I have a Mark III and when shooting soccer with the 300mm f/4L i cant seem to get up to 10 frames a second. As soon as i put the 1.4xII on, i can easily get it, as can I with my 70-200 with or without the 1.4x. Any ideas of why this may be? The lens is flawless otherwise. Thanks in advance!

| ->> PS, this is with or without drive speed priority set. |

| ->> Check Cf III 3 to see if you have drive speed priority or tracking priority selected. If you have tracking priority selected (I believe it's #0) then the camera will prioritize focusing over drive. I know it's not much, but hopefully it's a little help. |

| ->> Jordan, in re-reading your second post, it seems like you already checked what I wrote. My other suggestion would be to have the lens calibrated to the camera. When I get a new lens, it seems to focus much better and faster after I have it calibrated by Canon. |

->> Dirty / worn contact on the lens? It may be that the contacts on the 1.4 are making better contact with the lens than the lens makes with the body thus providing a better signal when it is used. Check to see if any of the contacts appear dull, dirty or even dented or slightly indented.
Just a hunch but I'd give the mount on the 300 the twice over. Especially if putting an extender on it solves the problem. |

->> Eric,
Thanks! Any good ways of cleaning those contacts? I've heard a pencil eraser? |

->> Drop or two of straight alcohol on a q-tip. I'm not a huge fan of erasers. The contacts on high-end electronics are plated with REAL gold. Gold not only is a great conductor but it won't tarnish or readily oxidize. The more you do to protect that gold the better.
All you're trying to do is dissolve and wash/wipe away contaminants on the contacts. Mostly oils and the gunk on your skin. I once watched (and took photos for proof) an 'older' gentleman at his grandson's game borrow his wife's nail file to clean the contacts on his lens because he was getting focus errors. He just sat there filing the contacts..... then got an err 99 and got even more frustrated and turned the file to the contacts in the body....
Not suggesting you try that approach. |

->> Jordan, I had this same problem with my MkIII and 300mm F/4.
It only happened with this lens.
I found that if you turn off the IS, it picks back up to 10fps. Weird.
I also have drive speed priority, so it should be firing that quickly regardless of whether there is even a lens on the camera. |
