Nikon D300s Focus Question
Carlos Gonzalez, Photographer

->> Hello All,
I am teaching photo workshop and a student has a Focus issue with her Nikon.
I shoot Canon so I’m familiar with its AL-Servo mode. I assume Nikon’s “C” mode is similar, but from her issue it doesn’t sound like it.
Here is the issue.

The student has a Nikon D300s. She says that the camera will not let her take an “out of focus” picture in the “C” mode. This doesn’t make sense to me, but I wonder if there is a way to disable/override this feature on the camera.

The student words, “The D300s can't be set to take a picture if it's not in focus. In other words, no way to be in continuous focus mode, depress back focus button, release it, recompose, and take the picture. It won't take unless the chosen focal point (center, usually) is in focus.”

Thanks in advance! cg

->> Well of course, she can always shoot in manual focus and that will solve that problem.

->> Seriously, here is how she can fix this. In the menus, under
custom settings>
autofocus>
AF-C priority selection>

there are three settings she can choose.
1. Release.
2. Release +focus
3. Focus.

If she sets it on No. 1, release, the camera will fire regardless if the shot is in focus or not. The second setting is what I use for most of my sports work. The camera continuously focuses and will fire with the focus being pretty close, but it's not fail proof at all. And the frames per second rate will also slow because the camera is attempting to lock on the focus.

And No. 3 is dead on focus. It won't fire at all unless the image is in focus. Hope this helps.

->> There is a custom setting for Nikon DSLR's in the menu for autofocus that you can set for either focus priority or release priority ... in the former the camera will only release the shutter if focus is achieved ...in the latter, the shutter will activate regardless of focus ....

On my D300 the options are A1-AFC Focus Priority ... for continuous focus and A2-AFS Focus Priority .... for single servo focus ... these options may have different menu locations on the D300s but should be located similarly ...

It's all in the manual ....
