Slideshow vs. Scroll

->> Curious to hear opinions--pros, cons on photo gallery formats...

Slideshow, a la NY Times "Lens" blog?

http://lens.blogs.nytimes.com/

or scrolling down a page of images a la "The Big Picture"?

http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/

Myself? I like whatever format makes the pictures big and pretty. Slideshows almost always have a "fullscreen" option and I like that but I have to keep in mind most people out there are not looking at photos the same way I am.

As Mike Meyers/Linda Richman would say, "Talk amongst yourselves."

->> If the presentation is to market your skills or the images themselves, I prefer a slideshow with thumbnails and controls so the prospective client has the choice of watching without effort, or selecting the images of most images to view. I find the less folks have to scroll, the more time they spend viewing the images ... at least that seems to apply to non-photographer types ...

->> The Big Picture appears correctly formatted in RSS readers, which I primarily use to read the Internet, so I prefer scrolling for that reason. Not even a preview photo appears in Google Reader for Lens Blog, so it's a bit tougher to keep up on. I'm sure it has something to do with Flash or jQuery, but I'd rather just keep it simple and allow people to scroll.

Scrolling is mindless and completely at the viewers control as far as speed and direction.
With the myriad of slide shows using different controls I think that possibly presents confusion or frustration for the viewer who may want to view one photo longer or skip on through a few rather quickly, then they are trying to locate the controls rather than viewing the pictures.

->> Matt, I prefer the Slideshow, as I too like the full-page option and viewing the images in the highest resolution possible.

Jodie, if you want to control the speed of the slideshow, just hit the "next" arrow on the screen, or the right arrow on your keyboard, and the show advances one page.

One annoying part of Slideshow, though, was that there was an ad inserted a couple times in the middle of the show. I could have done without this.
