| ->> A sports writer here at the paper wants to use scanners to listen in to high school coaches on their ersatz NFL radios on Friday night. Its a feature story idea. The radio models change from school to school. Anyone have a place to start with this? |

| ->> I would assume that the coaches would be aware that this was happening. Why not check to see if they have an extra headset? |

->> Radioshack or Uniden make good scanners. Preferably a Uniden since they have a feature called Close Call which scans frequencies being used nearby (http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Close_Call)
I dont know the frequency ranges for every HS but I would take a look at this: http://forums.radioreference.com/general-scanning-forum/47744-football-coac... Hopefully your local school uses a basic un-encrypted UHF/VHF system that can easily be monitored and easily found without going into the complex trucked systems or encryption.
Good luck and if you have any more questions feel free to message me. |

->> Ah, Bob. Brilliant. I'm so used to having to resort to guile (see the wikipedia entry on "crime scenes") that it didn't even occur to me to just ask nicely to listen in for a night. I like it.
I'll look into those frequencies. We have some nice Uniden scanners with the Close Call function, too. |

->> You can do the same thing for D-1 football. The "wireless tree" can easily be found on the sideline w/ the manufacturer's name on it, and in some cases the frequencies are actually displayed on the units! Also, I laugh when I see NFL coaches covering their mouths on the sidelines when anyone with enough motivation to research easily found wireless microphone frequencies can buy a $100 hand held scanner and listen in.
For instance: Go here
http://mysite.verizon.net/k3fss/pghradio.html#N and the frequency for in-game communications for all NFL teams can be found by scrolling down to the "N" section (alphabetized listing). (If there is voice inversion scrambling, it can be rendered somewhat intelligible by fine tuning the sideband frequencies. It takes practice)
I have a scanner and from my home I can hear everything from all the fast food joint drive-up order systems to police, everything in range. You can buy a very detailed national directory of scanner frequencies at Borders or B&N. |
