->> Alright, just a quick question...
I have got to send my 50D into Canon ASAP because my images are all coming out blurry (no. this is not a user error). I was wondering if any of you would be around at the game that might have an extra body I can borrow. My 50D is all I got and I don't want to mess this game up. It is a huge deal for me to be there and I don't want to come home empty handed. I would rent one, but I just got married/still in school and I have no money.
Please let me know if you can help. Thanks. |

| ->> Can't help you on the camera body, but could you post a few shots that exhibit your problem? Maybe there is a fix someone could suggest that does not involve sending it in. |

->> ...yeah... I will go ahead and describe my problem and also what I have heard could possibly be the actual problem.
First of all, my camera will focus great. However, recently when I go to shoot it, it will hesitate to fire and then when it does some times the focus will go nuts and I will end up with nothing for images, just blurs.
However, I shot 2 football games this weekend and going through my images I noticed that nothing is sharp. Not a single one. there are pics where they appear sharp from a distance, but when you get a little closer... they are not long all that sharp. I pair my 50D with my 70-200mm IS 2.8.
This weekend was the first time I have ever had this problem. I asked a few other photographers what they thought it might be and this is what I have heard...
-Did you check to make sure that you didn't have it in timer mode? (I'm not stupid. Plus it doesn't happen all the time.)
-That is what happened to my 50D before it crashed. (That's not good, I can't even afford the one I have let alone having to send it in/buy a new one)
-It might be the contact between the shutter button and the camera. (Most reasonable answer.)
So there are a lot of possibilities. I will go ahead and post a few on my page and you can tell me what you think. Thanks! |

Cannot tell from the small images on the member pages. Can you please email me JPG files saved at 8 or 10 so I can see them in full resolution. |

| ->> I am in AI-Servo, I shoot manual with just a single (center) focus point. My lens/camera contacts are clean. I have never had a problem with the sharpness of my images until this weekend. And I use the shutter button as my focus inducer. |

->> Sounds like your camera is having similar problems my Mark II N had this year when I was shooting the College World Series. It drove me mad, I could focus on the pitcher standing still and it would be just off. Though, not every one of my images were out of focus, but a lot of them were. I sent my camera to Canon and they repaired it for a little over $200 with shipping. According to Canon the "mirror was not functioning properly" and they replaced the mirror spring.
Also, make sure the contacts on the lens itself are clean. That can cause problems as well. |

->> Robby,
You asked if anybody who would be around the Nebraska game would have a camera you could borrow, which is asking a lot. Nick Adams stepped up to the plate, and said he had a camera you could use for free, within walking distance of the stadium. And you didn't even get his name right. |

->> Reload your firmware. It's worth a shot before you send the body off to be worked on. The idea is that the programming gets buggered up and by reloading your firmware the software gets reset. A good friend swears by this - I'm on the fence, but it's free. If you are having the problems you describe, it should be immediately obvious if it works.
Just download it from the Canon site. |

| ->> Robby - Another thing you could check is your camera's diopter. It can cause things to be out of focus. |

->> Stephen,
I'm not sure about how some things work on the Canon side of the street, but in Nikon World, the viewfinder diopter only corrects the viewfinder...
Of course some models come with an micro-adjust function, but that's another can of worms. |

->> Another thing to consider -
If it is the contact under the shutter button, simply switch the AF/AE functions so that you are using the * button on the back to focus with. You're shooting manual, so the exposure lock isn't an issue if the contact is bad.
You may still miss an occasional shot if the shutter doesn't activate, but at least it won't drop focus. You may also discover why there is a quite large number of individuals that use the back button for focus.
That would buy you time to locate a backup body. |

->> Robby,
I was having the same problem with both of my 50D's. I only use them for remotes, but all of a sudden the images were looking soft. One was hit by a ball at the ACC Women's Basketball Tournament last year, so I thought that was the problem. But both were producing soft images which was confusing me, so I updated the firmware from 1.0.2 to 1.0.7 and the problem was solved.
Also, do you use AWB or do you White Balance before you shoot? The less you make your camera think the better. I see you use a 70 - 200. Is it an IS version? If so, turn the IS off since you are shooting at a high shutter speed.
Hope this helps.... |

->> Thanks everyone for the offers. I decided to try and fix my camera and work with it. I just didn't feel right about using someone else's stuff. I didn't want to accidently break something and just have another camera I can't afford to fix. But thank you all so much for the help.
Elisha, I saw your pics and saw a few that were just about the same as mine! Are you looking to get rid of your canon? You shoot Nikon right?
The game was off the wall. It was the best football experience of my life. Mainly because I almost felt like a pro. Ha-ha. I pissed a few folks off for not walking fast enough, but it wasn't my fault entirely. I could only walk as fast as the person in front of me. So sorry for that.
If you would like to see how I came out with photos.. I got some up on my profile page. However, for some reason it won't allow me to update the captions... So please don't judge me on that behalf. Thanks! |
