Magic Arm in carry-on bag?

->> I am flying to Haiti on American Airlines and want to carry a bag on. I have a Lowepro backpack and want to store a Magic Arm in there. Anyone been hassled by TSA or the Airline about storing one away?
Afraid of getting it taken or questioned when my flight leaves at 7a.m. and dont have time to get it back to my parked car.
Trying not to put a bag under the plane to eliminate the need to wait at baggage claim. Tight schedule.
Just wondering! Thanks |

| ->> alex, since I usually carry all my gear as carry on just want you to know I have never been questioned and I usually jam two magic arms in the roll on case. good luck. |

->> While there very well may an "official" stance, it really seems like it just depends on the person at the security checkpoint and maybe even their mood.
For example, I've taken my monopod through security and sometimes they have no issue with it at all, other times I'm told it has to be checked and isn't allowed in the cabin.
Sometimes my camera gear goes right through without a second look, other times each and every piece in my kit gets swapped.
In Puerto Rico once they saw my big Canon battery charger and a bundle of other cables and had to call 3 people over to look at it before even doing a hand inspection.
I've honestly never found any rhyme or reason to what will or won't be a hassle. I could tell you I've taken the same item on 20 different flights without anyone batting an eye, but, that doesn't mean the person at the checkpoint isn't going to stop you.
Best advice is get there early and have a spare collapsible bag with you so that if you do have to check an item, you've got something to put it through on. Better than having to surrender some gear. |

->> Alex,
I am in agreement with Chuck, I have never had a problem with a magic arm in my carry on. The only item of my photo gear that causes problems and got gate checked is the monopod. I now just put this in my checked bag.

->> If you have the box it came in, put it in that.
A lot depends on the airport, the "mood" of security and TSA personnel, etc.
I've had hassles in the past with monopods, small tripods, clamps and even Pocket Wizards and wireless mic kits.
I would think explaining it's purpose would be enough. But you never know. |

->> I agree with Robert. It all depends on the airport and how the security is there.

I have never had a problem other than the security wanting to take a look in the bag and do a swab. I usually carry 2 magic arms and my monopod in my bag and have never had an issue. Many of the security likes to make small remarks about the amount of gear. But other than that, Nothing.
Hope that helps. |
