->> I know there is a collective experience among all of you for shooting open ocean swimming from a boat.
Could you help me with ideas about shooting and gearing up?
Thanks in advance for your help! |

->> I haven't shot swimming but I did shoot the Volvo Ocean Race from a RIB in Boston Harbor. For the small RIB we were in the thing to do was shoot from the back of the boat(less bouncing), high shutter speeds, and timing the waves allowing the framing to fall into place. We cleaned the gear as soon as we were back on shore to remove any salts.
Was able to handhold a 500mm and get some great shots by just being patient. |

->> Brad,
You bring up a good point and one that I haven't really thought of. Not really about the swimming event but more about cleaning the gear.
I just got back from a family vacation and was using my gear to shoot us on the beach, sunrise, sunsets those kind of shots.
Do you recommend that I should get my gear cleaned just from the salt in the air or do you think it will be ok?
My gear never actually got wet. |

| ->> Personally I am probably overly cautious and clean my gear after every trip to the sea. Living in Boston I spend a lot of summer and fall trips to shoot lighthouses in New England, and I clean my gear after each one. Better safe than sorry and all that.. |
