->> I am looking for ideas for purchasing new equipment for our staff and am considering the idea of an equipment stipend. Anyone out there get an equipment stipend? Does it work?
Any other non-traditional ideas for purchasing equipment out there? |

->> I was given a stipend from my publisher to purchase a system. Funny how you can stretch the dollar when you really need to.
I think a plan where you have a certain amount per photog——say $4,000 just for a working number——plus a few pool items, like a 300 f/2.8
Canon stuff goes for way less via used and you could have each shooter find the best stuff within one brand that works for their style of shooting and then have some pool items for everyone.

| ->> bruce, I don't know if a stipend will work in this day and time with the horrendously high cost of equipment. unless of course the stipend is around $10 grand. as far as pool equipment, long glass is a great way to go for pool stuff but this is where you're going to have to get everyone on board with the same system. you can't be buying a Canon 400 2.8 for sally then a Nikon 300 2.8 for harry. everyone needs to be on board with the same system. it was pretty much a nightmare at our paper when we switched from nikon to canon. no one was happy because we had a shortage of canon glass at the beginning...good luck. |

->> Bruce,
Topeka had this a long time ago. What I'll tell you is their structure was difficult, the stipend was based on how much you already owned (a %) Don't recall specifics, David Eullit could have better info.
What I will say is make sure there is a comprehensive repair/insurance part to this as well. Who pays for repairs (both wear and tear or accident). Topeka would pay for a repair if say you dropped it, but not if the shutter went out)
Good luck!

| ->> Bruce - Are you looking into a new system entirely? Switching from one brand to another? Or just supplementing what you already have? What is the current situation with how the photographers get equipment? Do they use their own, does the newspaper supply the equipment, or a combination of both? A little more info would be helpful... |
