| ->> I've received several emails from folks headed this way to cover the Duke-Alabama game this weekend and thought I'd just send out some info for folks coming to Durham. Be prepared for somewhat of a shock. This is pretty much a basketball school and covering football has always been a challenge. First you will face some massive traffic problems. There are only a few two lane roads leading to the stadium. They are adding 4000 extra seats to the stadium, the majority of these are along the track behind the end zones. This will cause some egress problems we never have had at Duke behind the sidelines. Crowd control barriers will limit the room to get behind the benches. This is usually a factor at a lot of ACC venues but will be a first for Duke. The upstairs press facility is small, very small. I actually have no idea how they will handle the influx of scribblers and photogs. There is an even smaller room on the field level which is shared by the cheerleaders, photographers and video logistics crew. This room is very small. (there have actually never been more than three shooters working in there) That factor combined with the 3000 seats at that end of the stadium should make for a very interesting day. Now the bad news. Forget about the internet working during the game. It doesn't. Plain and simple. Hasn't worked for years. They have a wifi guest system which is blazing fast, just not while the game is in progress. The best we have been able to figure out is the scoreboard video replay system runs their video feed through that internet connection during the game and it eats up all the bandwidth. We have been trying to get this issue resolved for YEARS and it hasn't and won't be fixed for Saturday. Hi speed stick? That didn't work during the sold out opening game two weeks ago and there are going to be an extra 4000 seats out there so it is unlikely 1) you'll be able to connect 2) have a data rate that you can actually send photos with. There is also no telling how long it will take to get off the field level after the game since there will be about 3000 people on the field level in those seats who will also be trying to leave. Probably the best news right now is the weather forecast is great. Low 80's with very low humidity. Feel free to email me if you have specific questions not answered here. |

->> Chuck,
Thanks for the update. I think most of the photographers from Alabama have been warned of what to expect. At least it is an early game so we'll have a little extra time for Plan B. Looking forward to the low humidity. |

| ->> Also, don't forget to grab an arm band from the upstairs press facility (3rd floor) before walking down to the field. That is something new this year and security may not let you onto the field without one. |
