Volume discount pricing

->> I have photographed my local HS sports for about 4 years and probably have hundreds of images of each baseball, basketball and football player over that period. Now many parents are interested in purchasing their kid's sports images in bulk on a DVD. Obviously, I would want to apply some kind of a discount for volume. Is there a mathematical formula that anyone can suggest? For example, 1-10 images are 10% off, 11-50 images are 20%, etc?

->> If you got a parent buying say 200 images from say three years of their kid playing high school sports you could always do a deal like $200.00 for a DVD of all their kid playing.

If the photos have't sold for 3 years and they are the only person looking to buy them make then make a deal. You will be suprised how well it works if you say I have three years of photos that you can have for (????). I mean who else is gonna buy little jonny after he moves on?

->> You'll still get a majority who will think $200 is a ridiculous price. They won't look beyond the circumference of the DVD and price its value based on that alone. They could get a new release movie for $30.00. They can get a DVD game for $30.00. Why can't they get those images for $30.00? There's that argument and of course the heap of scrap metal argument too... they think they are doing you a favor by taking it off your hands before it rusts.

It's a totally different mentality out there.

->> I've had no problem charging $25 for high res images over 3 years old, and $350 per game.

If they want the image bad enough to ask, $200 is not unreasonable.

->> Max,

I get this request VERY frequently at all levels I cover, youth to college. I have had no problem with supplying these and the price is "somewhat" dictated by the amount of images but MORE about how long it will take to find 2,3,4 years worth of images of one player. Keep this in mind!!

I have had a pitcher who's parents told me every game he pitched in over 4 years, it was very easy for me to find these. Then I had a shortstop want all images... this was 10X more time to find him at bat and in the field and he played every game of all 4 years. The amount of images were about the same, its easy to shoot the pitcher, but the price was %50 more for the shortstop due to the time involved.

I also supply what I call career album these are actuall prints the parents pick out and I put them in a wedding type album. These are priced accordingly.

I am finding more customer want the high resolution images and the demand increases in the higher end/more affluient communities, or the higher level of play. Fortunatly I have also found they are willing to pay and understand what they are getting.

So don't just price based on qty but how long it will take you to find them.

Jim

->> Jim... would it be easier for you to put those games online and let the parents find the images they want?

->> I only shoot one high school during football season. I was selling 4 X 6 pictures for $9, the hi-res downloads were the same price. I was compensated for the games so the sales were gravy. A parent asked me to make him a deal and he would buy every single print of his kid. The star running back. I asked him if $6 per 4 X 6 was a good enough deal. He said, yes. He bought every single picture. I didn't over shoot the kid either and I only posted a very select edit of the games. The deal worked out very well that year. It hasn't worked that well since. This year the trend is towards the downloads, which is great.

I know, some of you may say that I should charge more for each print. I did a few test games, and the market really did not respond well to that. In three games, there was one sale for a 4 X 6 at $25. Plenty of people looked at the images, but there was only one sale. One reason perhaps is that only about 20 players out of 60 play on a regular basis. The others are on the bench and hardly if ever get on the field.

I also shoot the games as if I were covering for a publication, so I don't target every kid. I'm more interested in making good photographs.

->> Bench players have value. I have sold a ton and I mean a ton of bench player photos. You need to get the bench kids laughing on the sidelines (Portrait) or if they go in for special teams fire the motor drive up and blast away for that one play.

I can shoot the star running back that makes all the highlight reals each week and maybe sell 1-2 prints. Yet I can shoot JIMBO the overweight linebacker who plays 3 downs a game and sell 10-15 prints.

The kids that don't play much, the parents want to see them in action. Give it a try, it's made me a nice profit over the years.

->> Paul,

All the images are posted.... yet they do not want to take the time to go find them and would rather pay me to. I am more than happy to price this in.

Never had a complaint about the price and $200 is on the lower end and typically for a single youth season of 75-100 images.
