IMovie not seeing all of camcorder, help!
Jeff Stanton, Photographer

->> Hey everyone, our paper purchased a new HD 1080 camcorder by Sony. It's a little thing, but records beautiful video and the audio is pretty amazing.

We just use iMovie on a G5 Mac (not an Intel) and connect through a firewire cable. When we open iMovie and try to import the video, it is seeing the controls because I can play, pause and rewind on the computer. But when I try to import clips, the movie just plays straight through and no clips are imported.

Any idea what is going on with this? Thanks for any help. Jeff

->> Jeff, let me understand what you mean when you say you're "seeing the controls." When you plug the camcorder into the mac, are you getting the pop-up screen that gives you thumbnails of the clips? On the bottom of that pop-up you should see options for importing manually and automatically. Is that the screen you're seeing?

->> Yes, I am seeing those controls and I am able to control the camcorder thru those controls. But the clips are not coming into the pane. The movie just plays until the end. No clips are coming in.

->> Hmm, that's frustrating. Maybe check Apple's camcorder compatibility chart here to see if that's an issue:

Also, pardon me if this is too obvious, but you may want to check to see that you've got the latest version of imovie, as it gets updated to support more cameras over time.

->> Jeff,

We had an issue where our standard def camera wasn't seen by our iMac after some firmware update. The work around was to attach a firewire hub and then it worked. Try that... It's cheap (annoying), but cheap. Maybe that would help.

->> Here's a fun question: Is the format of the files a transport stream, something like an AVHDC format or does it record to something more user friendly like an AVI file?

What i would do is to try to copy the files straight to the desktop and import them from there, or at least see what format they are in and see if thats something that can be brought straight into iMovie without converting it.

We ran into a problem with our Canon new $500 dollar consumer grade camera where it records in AVHDC and after finding the files buried on the card, we also found that they wouldn't easily convert as they required an MPEG-2 codec. Pain in the ass and confusing as hell? You bet.

->> try mpeg streamclip, which is a free download and will convert most anything to get you into avi or mov files that are friendly to iMovie....
