->> since I know many here use GPS', I was wondering if it is common for the car adapter to break? The piece that fits into the cigarette lighter to make it operate is missing.
Can these be bought at stores or just online? I have called several NYC stores that I thought would sell them and they put me on hold and keep disconnecting |

->> Did the little tip that holds the fuse pop out? If so, that's a pretty common design for those plugs and you might be able to find a similar plug at Radio Shack or something and scavenge parts.
Did you buy the FM traffic receiver to go with your Nuvi? If so (and if you want to keep getting traffic alerts), it's built in to your power cord, which makes it an expensive fix if you want to keep this functionality (you have to buy another receiver/cord, which is pricey).
If you can't scavenge parts and you didn't buy the traffic receiver, then you can use a relatively cheap car adapter. The Nuvi 360 OEM adapter goes for around $9 on ebay, and I'm pretty sure it's just a standard USB with a right-angle end, so if you have a USB car adapter you could use that. |

->> Yes, I'm on my third auto power adapter for my Garmin Nuvi.
They are plastic and the same thing always breaks...the tip with the spring loaded pin that connects to the power source. I've bitched to the company a couple of times and have received a form email response.
A WORD OF WARNING: You have to buy a Garmin replacement. Third party or piecing togther a USB cable to a auto adapter with a USB connector will not work 100% of the time.
(If you use a non-Garmin/3rd party USB power adapter the GPS goes into the data update mode but will not function. It is as if you have itt connected to a computer and does not work as GPS.)
There might be a 3rd party adapter that does work but I have yet to find it. I've tried a few and have returned them all.
Good luck.
(From my iPhone so not totally responsible for any typos.) |

If you run into this, you can sometimes get around it by leaving the charger unplugged while the gps boots, then plugging it in when it gets to the map data portion of the boot sequence. Not ideal, but it's worked for me in a pinch. :-) |

->> Unknown if it would work...I guess you might get insight on whether it works by checking the comments.
All I can say is...I tried a couple of different 3rd party adapters (non-Garmin), both did not work. Tried a car adapter with a USB cord connection, it did not work either. Also tried a TomTom auto adapter which a Best Buy "associate" claimed would work...which it did not
Doing some searching on the net, this is a common problem. Garmin gps units have a unique pin out for their USB power adapters.
I guess you could take them at their word and these 3rd party adapters do work... |
