I want an iPad, do I "need" one?

| ->> I justified an iPad purchase initially because I wanted to use it as a TelePrompTer for my video business, which works great, and it's worked out in other ways for me too. I've really appreciated having an iPad while on trips -- it helped me find my way around Los Angeles this summer, for example. And Debra, I have been able to edit, caption, and transmit with an iPad, although the workflow is clunky. I started an iPad blog describing the uses I've found for it -- the largest category is "justifying an iPad." It's at www.ipadapalooza.com. |

| ->> There was an interesting read on Yahoo news a few days ago about ebook readers, iPads, etc. For example, it discussed uploading a book to it at a cost of $12.99 when the actual hardcover book was available in the store for under $10. It mentioned yet another one available in paperback at $8.99. I thought the price of materials like books was supposed to drop, not go up. |

->> Shelley, great blog, you listed some apps I did not know about yet.
Scott, unless you are getting it for fun, I wouldn't get it if you don't have a reason. Whereas I love sitting in bed reading the different news apps on Sundays, that in not the main reason I have the iPad. I use it for client viewing and posting when I am on the road. I don't think it is a perfect tool for transmitting yet if that is what you are asking but it has benefits for professionals.
Speaking of travel, the iPad is great for movies on a plane when the guy infront of you makes it impossible to open a laptop. |

Just saying.

| ->> I've been playing with one for the past week or so. It's interesting in that it's a vision of what might be but it isn't really there yet for use as a serious photographic tool. If you want something for email, web surfing and reading downloaded books it's fine. If it cost $100 I'd get one but $400 for what it does now just ain't worth it IMO. My wife has one so that she can check email, etc. on overnight trips out of town and not lug her laptop eveywhere. |

->> I liked the portability of the ipad during my season this past year. It was nice to have something with around a 10 hour battery life on long long road trips.
It was nice to upload my movies, tv shows, etc.. and watch that to past time.
There are many things I wish it had that I hope it will in the future.
But with so many other tablets coming out this year and next I am sure you will be able to find one that suites your needs just fine. |

| ->> I have an iPhone and thought a lot about an iPad. It seems to me that if I could buy a phone that is just a phone, the iPad would be a great tool. I love the iPhone apps. The larger screen makes reading the internet, maps, email and books easier I would think. There is an FTP app "FTP on the Go." |

->> Have you ipad users found any great portfolio apps for showing portfolios to clients (other than the photos app it comes with)?
I was puzzled, looking at one in the store - it appeared that no matter what size photo you uploaded, the ipad "optimized" the photo at 163 or 132ppi.
Perhaps there is a third party app that will actually upload full res (or at least decent sized files) so that clients can zoom into your photos without getting the Atari 26oo treatment.
Could you upload a pdf portfolio and show your photos that way?
Anyone found any workarounds or good apps to accomplish this? |

->> Robert,
A friend told me about FolioBook last week. It'll let you upload images at 1024x748 and allows you to customize the homepage. I haven't played around too much with it yet, but it doesn't appear to have the ability to show captions.
http://www.foliobook.mobi/
The app costs $14.99
A PDF portfolio would work as well, I've come to really like the app GoodReader for PDF's and other documents. Probably the coolest feature of the app is the ability to send files from your laptop or other computer over a wireless network to the iPad through the computers web browser. |

->> The Sunday Times here in the UK reported at the weekend that Apple are working on an iPad Mini. It supposedly has a 7" display but with the same resolution, only wifi and is estimated to be half the price.
Apparently whilst Apple have done well with the iPad, research has shown many people don't feel justified in paying that price when a cheaper laptop will give them more options.
If you are unsure Scott then I'd suggest that you look for more information on that and also check out the non Apple options that Matthew mentions. The same report claimed that several will be launched at a trade show next week.
If nothing else you should be able to get a feel for how the market is going and whether the reasons for your doubts about the iPad will be resolved in the near future by another manufacturer, specifically with regards to your business needs. |

->> It's a brilliant gadget and my portfolio looks great on it - even using the iPhoto style app. I used Airsharing Pro to run my folio PDF on my iPhone but it doesn't seem to be iPad ready yet.
When buying tech gear that I'm not wholly able to justify I tend to quote King Lear at myself, my wife and anyone else who is doubting the wisdom of my proposed purchase:
"Reason not the need, for in the poorest things our basest beggars are superfluous". |

->> Debra,
It doesn't look like Photoshop or PhotoMechanic will ever run on the iPad (at least not in its current version http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/content_page.asp?cid=7-10052-10708) but there's a darn handy app out there to make up for that.
Filterstorm (http://filterstorm.com/) will let you browse photos, crop and adjust exposure and color, add IPTC data AND ftp out of the app. It's a one stop app for editing in the field. It only works with JPEGs, but I don't know if you'd want to try to convert raw files on an iPad.
A couple of my colleagues have Filterstorm on their iPads and they are very happy with it.
Another useful iPad tip, Air Display turns you iPad into a second screen for your Mac laptop (or desktop) computer, (http://avatron.com/apps/air-display/).
There are still some issues using iPads to replace laptops like lack of storage space, issues with the iOS and photo metadata and problematic use of a Compact Flash card reader, but it's on the verge of becoming an incredibly useful device that doesn't replace a laptop but certainly supplements it.

This app is still in development, but it looks promising.

Organize it on Flickr in different sets... synchronize it on iPad, it cashes the images and you can show a great looking slide show of the different set even when you are not online. |

You can do the following to put a nice portfolio together.
Basically you use aperture or heck even iPhoto to create a "book" of your photos. Lay them out however you want. Then you basically print a .pdf of the book to itunes, and open it in iBooks on your device.
I don't have aperture, but thought there was book printing in iPhoto, so I fired up iPhoto for the first time ever to try it out. It worked just fine, here is a link on the aperture details.
