->> David, if I'm understanding you right you simply want to "reset" your Time Machine backup archive from scratch. Remove the history it has already built up and have it start over again from today forward?
If this is the case, open System Preferences -> Time Machine and turn off Time Machine. Then open your backup volume, this sounds like it is your Drobo, and delete the folder: "Backups.backupdb" Empty the trash.
Back in System Preferences turn Time Machine back on and it should begin the backup again. Since it is starting over this could take a while. |

->> Ah got it. There is definitely not an easy way to do this. Time Machine is designed to be set and forget so anyone's grandma can use it. No "confusing" options like you're looking for.
The main way Time Machine will get rid of older files is when the backup volume gets full. So one option you have is to point it at a smaller volume which will in turn replace older files quicker. If you have a Drobo FS it looks like it has a built in way to set this size limit. If it is another model I'm not sure, but if you can partition the volume that would be a solution.
Google pulls up a bunch of articles on how to limit the size of the volume which might help you get things setup:
