Canon 30D - fix or sell as is?

->> I have a 30D that needs a new shutter (error 99) and with CPS the repair is about $150 I believe.
Is it worth fixing it? If I sold it without the repair what should I ask for it? After repair - the body is in 8+ or so condition - what should I ask?
I have the BG-E2 grip for it and I believe I still have the box and manuals.
Thanks,

->> I just had a 30D sent into CPS for the same error - ran a few dollars over $200 (I'm a gold member). They replaced the shutter assembly and top cover assembly. The camera is like-new again mechanically. I had about 91K shots on it and the camera is rated for 100K.
Not sure what they go for on the market today...but if you would like to keep an additional or backup body, I say repair it. I don't think you're going to fetch a lot of money for it either way - probably not much at all if broken and you might not make too much more if fixed since it's been superceeded many times over now in the Canon line. |

->> If the grip works well, sell it separately and list the non working camera body "for parts or repair" and include a copy of the CPS repair estimate with the photos of the camera.
CPS, from the sound of it, gave your camera a clean bill of health with the exception of the need for a new shutter. In some ways, this is less of a risk for a buyer than a camera that is currently working. A working camera with no known problems can be one or two clicks away from a wrecked shutter, and there is no way to avoid that. You might be pleasantly surprised by the amount of interest that your camera generates.
Selling these separately is, unfortunately, two transactions instead of one but you are likely to make a better return on it this way and it will be less of a headache than paying for the repair, shipping the body to CPS, waiting for it to come back from CPS, and then selling it. |
