->> Being a bit jealous of those who cover pro sports on a regular basis - our paper is heavy on local sports, so you probably won't find me at a Steeler game - I decided to offer up a few of my own tips to those covering the D-III of the sports world. High School.
•Go though your gear now. Once football/soccer/tennis/cross country/volleyball start, you won't have time to find missing cords, clean sensors, or have gear repaired. Do it now.
• Go through your clothes now. Those of you in parts of the west and south may not fully appreciate this, but long pants, insulated undies, gloves, hats and boots are status quo north of the Mason-Dixon line. Locate the gloves you liked last season, load up on hand warmers, and buy the pair of boots you've been considering. Nothing worse that breaking boots in on the job...
• Talk to the writers now. As fall sports tabs go into layout, they are thinking about who is back, and who is moving up.
• Find as many rosters as you can now. Giving up a good shot on dedline is hell when you can't figure out who #65 is. If you understand code replacement, set it up while you have slack time.
• At least try to start stretching a bit. You're not gona' get in shape by Friday, but try to give your back and legs fair warning.
• Hot dogs are not a food.
• Aleve before the game is better than after.
• Any TV on the sideline will be local. You probably already know them. Ask nice, and they might let you charge a battery on their generator or sit in the truck at halftime to chimp.
• Complaining about the marching band's program won't help. Someone thought Stairway to Heaven was a wonderful choice.
and with that, we're 1st and 10 at the 30...... |

->> Dave, good thread to start. More photographers in the U.S. are shooting high school sports than pro, so nothing wrong with broaching this topic.
I started last Friday and came away with some decent work along with four bad mosquito bites. So I bought some Off earlier in the week and I'm more prepared this week. |

| ->> Having covered MLB all summer long and despite the fact that I will be on the field for both NFL and D1 football this fall I cannot wait for high school football to start. Earlier this week I went through all my gear and made sure I was ready for the HS season, code replacement completed, foul weather gear pulled out of the depths of the closet, boots polished, and flash mounted to my old monopod. Just because it's high school doesn't mean it is any less important, the drive and determination of most high school players will outshine that of the majority of professional players any day and it is for that reason alone that I still choose to shoot high school football. Monday 8/30 I will be shooting MLB, Thursday 9/2 I'll be shooting NFL pre-season, but what I am looking forward to the most is Friday 9/3 and the first game of the high school season for me. |

->> I'll second the stretching/Aleve bit...
I've found this to be super true: Let your body know BEFORE you put it into overdrive that you'll be working it hard.
I'm only 26, but finding it hard to recover from kneeling down a bunch and running around with far too much gear.
Good post. |

->> I thought about how to express this one off and on all day, and came up with this:
If your waistline in inches is less than your age in years get the physical you've been putting off. As a newly diagnosed diabetic, I could have kicked myself in the ass sooner if hadn't put off the annual for about two years.
And in keeping with the spirit of the original post, check your bodies and confirm the settings haven't drifted into some unusual range best suited for daylight sports.... |

->> Check my body settings ....? Oh, you mean my camera.
Do you mean if my waistline is 60 inches, I'm OK until next year? (just kidding, of course) |

->> Dave .... I can relate to the diabetic issue ... but I can't agree that hot dogs are not a food .... I have to have at least one or two per HS season ... just wouldn't be time for football otherwise ;-)
Great advice on all the other points ... and I never complain about the Marching Band ... they are some of my best customers ... |

->> Max, I would kill for 7pm starts! WV has 7:30pm starts due to travel time, and very few Sat afternoon games. We have our first game tonight.
Dave, I have a pair of 74" baseball pants someone donated to us for a baseball equipt drive...you want them??? You will need to "sinch 'em". |

->> Dave, Great post!
Scott, I gave up NFL 4 or 5 years ago because of lack of profitability. Don't miss it for the same reason. Much more fun and a lot less crowded than a NFL sideline.
Sam: This part of Iowa FINALLY switched to 7PM starts. The light last night at the first game was beautiful. I'm guessing I can get 3 to 4 games (or maybe more with the D3s) into the season before it's too dark to use available light. I had shot Junior College Soccer at 6 and that was easy. The third game I got to at 8pm was shot using flash, but needless to say it was FUN to shoot some football in real light.
Finally Dave P, just be glad you got the physical. As a cardiac nurse once explained to me AFTER I got a stent put in: "we get to take care of the lucky ones". Translated that means that people put it off and many of them die because the issue gets to the point where it kills them. |
