->> We are looking to overhaul our galleries page and I am looking for some inspiration. Can anybody suggest a few newspaper sites that have nicely designed, easy to use gallery pages?
Thanks! |

->> Hey, Justin... you can check ours out at:
http://www.jhnewsandguide.com/gallery.php
...not really sure they're "nicely designed" but they're sure easy to use.
Also, I might suggest putting together galleries with Sound Slides. It's an easy way to create a slideshow, and can be done with no music. The drawback is that if you want to add or remove images from a particular gallery you have to recreate and re-upload the entire slideshow. |

Bradly with soundslides, you don't have to upload the whole gallery if you change photos (when you only have photos no audio). You only have to upload the changed photos, after you reexport them, and replace the old .xml file with the new one on the server. |

->> @Eli-
That's what I meant. If you have a "gallery" of images as a single soundslides piece you have to re-export that piece in the application, then replace the old one on the server, correct?
With how ours is set up, I can upload single images to a gallery in our web site's CMS and remove others as well.
There's pros and cons to both; Soundslides is clearly more elegant looking, ours is quicker to upload and modify photos but it's a bit clunky to click through. Ours is also easier to share individual images via the ShareThis tab. |

->> @Bradly
You have to re-export the gallery from the application, but you only have to upload the photos that were added to the server not the whole publish_to_web folder. Then you have to replace the .xml file on the server with the new one. I have never tried deleting photos from a gallery this way only adding. |

| ->> Our web folks won't let us use Soundslides, but they have scripted a pretty slick way for us to put together and upload galleries. The front page of our website has three featured galleries and if you click on the "More Photos" below them it takes you to a page with all featured galleries, staff galleries, and other galleries: http://www.lasvegassun.com/photos/ |

| ->> I've always loved the Boston Globe's Big Picture. It's a WordPress blog theme - can't remember which one off hand but it should be pretty easy to find. The benefit of the Big Picture / WordPress gallery is that the theme can be customized to look a lot like your paper's website. |

The site 10,000 words did a post a little while ago --- 11 must-follow news photo blogs: http://bit.ly/ceTh5f
Pretty great list and some really great work being done out there.
This should keep you busy for hours.
Hugs,

->> We just launched a large format photo gallery at The Spokesman-Review. The inspiration for it was Boston.com's Big Picture. For years I pleaded with our online developers to build our own big picture gallery and they finally came through a few months ago. This is how photography should be displayed online. I hate fussy galleries with slow load times and lousy display. This format solves all three of these issues. The best part is that I can create a slideshow from anywhere through the web-based interface.

->> Hey Justin,
We just launched our photographer's blog yesterday and it seems to have made a pretty good soft launch. Our graphics and webstaff build a custom HTML gallery using Moveable Type, which we code ourselves, but isn't too difficult to use. Check it out if you're interested.
