Sony leapfrogs over Canon for full AF video on a DSLR

->> Those of us that have been shooting 1080 video from the 5DMII, 7D, and 1DM4 bodies have been excited to see our true HD projects come to life with narrow DOF and gorgeous color & low noise... but! We've all had to give up the awesome accuracy of the EOS AF system when hitting that button to switch to video. I've spent a fair amount of money on Olympus lenses from the OM system and a few Leica R lenses that I use on my 5D Mark II to get that total manual focus control.
Sony has now announced not one but TWO cameras under $749 using what I thought was Canon's pellical mirror technology (pellicle reflex mirror). Now you'll be able to go to Best Buy in a few weeks and buy a digital camera SLR that will AF while you shoot video.

Everyone knows I'm a huge fan of Canon and love their products but the fact that Sony released a body using technology that Canon had in the late 50's disgusts me. I need this feature now!!!
If you have never looked around at the Sony stuff, it's pretty cool. Their full-frame camera body would be an awesome shooter for portrait studios and serious magazine work. They don't have the motor drive speeds of the Canon gear but it's really nice gear, all the same, and costs a lot less than the Canon bodies, albeit with a lot fewer lens choices.
I'm not ready to make the switch to Sony from Canon, but once I get to try one of these bodies, I might want to add a system for video for sports action photography.
For more information on why this development is so important, please reference this video I made of last year's SEC Championship game where I literally ask Canon to make a camera with this type of mirror. Just 8 months later, not Canon but Sony delivers!!!

Bummer drag for Canon, koodos for Sony for thinking ahead of the big boys... |

->> Yeah, but the Nikon is based on contrast-detection AF - different animal, even if they claim better processing makes it faster and more responsive.

->> Hard to say. Either one can stink if not implemented correctly. Proof will be in the shootout that will no doubt happen shortly. :-)

->> What is wrong with Canon? Just give the world a camera with a video form-factor, the chips from the 5DMk2 and a couple of XLR imputs that will take EOS lenses. They would clean up in so many markets (including feature films) it'd be ridiculous.

->> I wonder why Canon hasn't built a dedicated video camera around the 5D MKII chip?
