->> I'll be shooting HS hockey for the first time soon. Want to know what to expect in terms of lighting. example: Is there again in stops due to the light kicking back off the ice.
I'll be using a 400 2.8 w/800or 1600 speedfilm. |

->> I recently shot some local Junior Hockey, and the lighting was very poor. I measured it at EV 6, so there is a long way to go to get decent lighting. From talking to other hockey shooters here, NHL lighting is significantly better, as you would expect. To get ISO 800 500/2.8 you need an EV of 9 for existing light. That is 3 stops over what I experienced at the junior arena.
The arena I shot at, the color temp was way off from 5,500K so a film shooter would have to compensate with a mired shift of maybe -100 mireds or so. The lighting I experienced was so poor I resorted to flash, to bring up the color temperature and improve the EV. |

->> If it's high school, expect the rink to be DARK and unevenly lit. The brightest local rink up here is about 1/250 2.8 at 1600 at each goal and -2/3 at darker spots in the middle. Set up strobes if you can. You generally have 2 choices for shooting positions: Penalty box or top of the bleachers, both of which have their own particular benefits and problems.
If it's your first time shooting and you're having trouble following the action, focus on the action around the goalie, as something is usually guaranteed to happen there. |
