The real reason there is a photojournalism class

->> A Journalism department head told me the other day that he puts a photojournalism class on the school schedule every year because he is always asked to cancel at least one class each semester. This way, he says, he doesn't have to cancel the important ones.

Some just don't get it.

Unfortunately that dean is probably safe. :(

Is this a CA school Davis? Just so someone starting school knows why their pj class might have gotten nixed. No need to confirm it, your silence will tell us everything.

->> The last daily I worked for printed the local college newspaper and I served as liaison to the school paper and help train them as to what we needed for prepress to print their publication .... the professor who was paid a tidy sum to be their advisor was never around .... I asked him once why he was never there to assist, train or mentor the group .... "I don't want anyone to think I'm telling them what to do," he responded .......

Good to know that tuition is well spent these days ......

->> Anyone that knows me also knows that silence is not my strength. For the record, it IS a CA school I talk of, but not Cal State Fullerton.

But, in fact, my days at CSUF may be done. Budget cut backs and class reductions have left few opportunities for part-timers. I took a year leave-of-absence last year so that I could maintain my PT seniority, and my return was based on classes available that needed faculty. There are none.

I'd return if asked, as it's been a great ten years there. Yet this past year was the first in a very long time when I could focus on just one thing: my own business. As a result I've been busier than ever, more satisfied than ever, and probably on a better track to retire before I turn 100.

Yes, there are more grads than jobs, that has always been the case. But the need for good journalism is greater than ever, so those with talent and drive will still find a way to work. The venues are different and and the readers (viewers?) are different too.

And the stories that have driven classic journalism are still there and still need to be told. The ongoing LA Times stories about the city of Bell are a good example. Where there is no coverage or interest, abuse happens, and that hurts everyone.

When the public tires of being left in the dark, they'll be back and searching for more and credible news sources. If all of us can hang on long enough, we'll be just fine.

But you need to be practicing real journalism now, otherwise you're just another blogger that use "I" way too much.

->> Davis,

Glad to hear this past year has been so productive for you. I was relieved to hear that you were not talking about CSUF in your original post here. It would be a damn shame if they lost your class or Mark Boster's. He's still doing his class right?

I can't agree with you more about the need for real journalism, just the medium to feed the appetite has changed.
