Surprise comparison between MacBook and Macbook pro

| ->> I was thinking of upgrading from my 2 year old 13in Macbook to the newest 15 in Macbook Pro. I looked at them side by side, both with glossy screens and the screen on my Macbook is whiter and brighter. Yes the MacBook Pro is a bit sharper, and yes I can load 8 meg of ram in the new one, and yes the I5 processor may run faster. But I can't get past the dimmer screen on the newest Macbook Pro and will keep my Macbook longer than I had planned. I just put in a new 500g 7200rpm hard drive and will boost the ram from 4 to 6 meg. |

Mark,
I have a 13" MacBook - Black, 13" MacBook Unibody and 13" MacBook Pro. The 13" Unibody & 13" MacBook Pro have the same screen & glass, however the 13" MacBook - Black has a screen that seems deceptively bright, but when in actual use side by side, you'll find the screen of the MacBook Pro superior.
I hate the glossy screens and wish they'd offer a matte screen for the 13" MacBook Pro, but that aside, check it out, you'll be happy with it. I find getting my images prepped for printing more accurate from the MacBook Pro screen than I did with the 13" MacBook - Black. |

I'm interested in how this thread comes out since I too am reaching the point of considering a more powerful laptop. |

All I have to say that is .... you live in Omaha, that in and of its self is fairly Inappropriate. You have the cow walking in circles to power the generator so you can get enough power to get your PowerBook 145b online? :0)
(Oh man I crack myself up sometimes...) |

Being a Native New Yorker, I have to wonder why in the world you'd move to Idaho ... then again as a Native New Yorker I keep wondering how I ended up in Connecticut ...
... I do however agree with your views on Nebraska :0) |

->> The overall brightness of a screen should not be an issue if you are going to calibrate it regularly. I have the latest 15" MBP with antiglare high res screen and after calibration it was a few percentage points darker than it had been.
I agree with the comment about the FW800 port - importing a lot of data is a lot quicker with the increased speed offered by FW800. |

->> I got my new 15" MBP a few weeks ago. I sprung for the upgrade to the hi-res matte screen....wow...the best $145 I've spent in a long time. It's glorious! Already, it makes my old 15" MBP look like by old, old 14" iBook G4, which maxed out at 1024x768!
And yes, the FW800 makes ingesting the cards super fast. I'm a big, big fan. |

| ->> If you get 8 Mb of RAM, as I just did on my new MBP, you will get far better results with Photoshop CS5 in 64 bit than you would with CS4 in 32 bit. |

I know the conversion from metric to standard can be complex, but I didn't know 8gb of RAM converted to 8MB of RAM ... I wonder how that translates from Pounds to USD :0) |

Is Chuck Liddy feeling ok?
He didn't leave a funny/inappropriate comment in a thread that can easily be taken further down the dark side.
Feel better Chuck.
On a serious note. Just got a MBP 15" with high res matte screen and it's pretty nice. With 8GB of RAM and an i5 processor doesn't dissapoint. The FW800 port is essential for fast image transfers and the illuminated keyboard does come in handy on occasion.
The downside is after 24 hours of use it's back at apple for red banding issues, probably a video card logic board issue. Quality control hasn't been too good. |

->> Fish. Thank you for noticing my internet sarcasm : ) After Neil's comment I became even more concerned that nobody noticed the difference between 8 MB and 8 GB
Neil. I also have one of the new i7 MBP's with 8 GB of ram. This was my first unibody mbp and changing ram isn't quite as easy as it used to be.
Problem is that it always sucks up all my ram leaving only around 100 mb "available" Is there some OS setting I'm missing? My PM cache is only about 2 GB and the activity monitor says that PM, Photoshop, firefox all are using about 800 mb of real memory when running. I know that doesn't add up to nearly 8 GB. what gives? |

->> Don't mean to drag this too off topic, but I'm in the market for a MBP, but with money as it is I would only be able to get a 15" brand new.
There's a used 17" out there from early 2008 as well for half the price that is decently specced. Are the screens on the 2010 variants that much better that I should nix this idea? |

For starters this thread got off topic a while back ... but the 2008 screens are very different from the current screens. |

->> Bert, I just installed cs5 and haven't even tried it out yet. I'm guessing it will handle the batch processing of my raw files more smoothly. I'm also hoping a 64 bit Bridge (an unfortunate yet integral part of my raw workflow) will move faster than a snail on cold day.
I wish I were running FCP on it because that would mean that USAT bought it for me to use. But alas, it is a personal computer, so no FCP license for me :( My USAT mbp is 2.5 years old I've abused it with 1080P footage long enough. Are you up for a refresh soon? |
