| ->> Photoshelter and my photoshelter web site are down and have been for some time tonight..Just scanned through old emails and didn't see a scheduled outage notification unless I over looked it. |

->> Photoshelter, Livebooks... all having trouble recently.
Ahhhh... meanwhile, never once in 4-1/2 years that I have accessed my web site has it been down. I'm sure it must have been at some point when I wasn't accessing it, but I have never not been able to get to it, even from Austria. And I'm not limited on anything; storage, portfolios, bandwidth... God love NeonSky.com; the best kept secret in photographer's web site hosting and design. Oh, and I have never had a price increase either ($45 p/mo). http://philhawkinsphoto.com |

| ->> Got you beat Phil ;-) Been with my ISP since Nov. 1998. Haven't had a price increase since I've started. The only time we've been down is when there was big virus outbreak in 2005 I think it was and once when a back up power source failed. They were back up and running in less than 24 hours. I get a call back or email usually within 12 hours of an inquiry. Check them out at http://www.shout.net |

->> Phil,
With all due respect, PhotoShelter did not experience an outage. I'm not sure what caused Jon's inability to reach the site, but your blanket statement that we are "all having trouble recently" is unfounded, unfair and a disservice.

->> I have had liveBooks and PhotoShelter pretty much since they both started. Actually for liveBooks I was probably one of their very very first customers.
Outages on either, doesn't happen, and among the very last things I ever think about or worry about. For that matter, never crosses my mind at all. |

->> Easy, fellas... Get your ears up. Just basing my comments on what appears on this board. I didn't make it up. People would not be posting "my site is down" if their site wasn't down. And in the case of Livebooks, more than one person experienced it.
Are we just a wee bit sensitive? |

->> When I nor my customer who is emailing me at can access my site(provided by photoshelter) or photosheter.com, I consider the site as being "down". If my choice of words was incorrect...sorry. I was able to get onto the sportsshooter website to type my question as well as MSNBC,ESPN and well as pick up gmail.
I wasn't slamming Photoshelter.
But...since I am here, I might as well gripe about the fact that I deleted a gallery(6,000 images) at 11:34 AM today and the PS website is still trying to process it. I am effectively locked out of my account and am unable to upload images. PS is working on the issue.
Phil, your site looks fantastic. I am looking into Neon Sky. Thanks for the tip! |

->> I don't know about Photoshelter, but Livebooks had some problems yesterday - do a Twitter search - lots of people experienced outages.
But over the years, I have found both Livebooks and Photoshelter to be very reliable. |

| ->> Jon I too tried to delete a folder of 1300 images from PS and had to call PS to get it done. Bottom line was that the support person deleted it for me on their end. I hung up and didn't give it much thought until I tried to login to upload a batch of photos. PS wouldn't let me in. I called back and found out that the process that had been started was effectively locking me out. When I called back I was told it could take several hours before I would be able to get back in. |

->> "Huh?" -
Uptime is the percentage of time which a server or service is accessible by an end user. Assuming that this is the only downtime in the last month, it was down (regardless of the reason) is less than 0.1% of the month.
ISP's have consistently worse records of uptime - in the 95% to 99% range.
Add to that problems in long distance backbones (a single one is upper 99%, but they usually use several separated lines - so up to about 99.99%), then you're going through several backbones (~99.9% uptime after 5 backbones), plus the occasional routing problem (~99.99% uptime, after 5 backbones -> ~99% end to end). By then (excluding the ISP), you're at ~99% from one location to another. There's some redundancy involved that gets you a little higher, but you're still in the 99.9% range after you're out your ISP's door. Every once in a while there's a major issue - usually backhoe-related, which will cut two cities off completely. Or, as happened in the late 90's, the east coast was almost completely cut off from the west coast for a few hours one night - a backhoe cut off the primary link and the secondaries weren't able to handle the load.
Here's some reading on a similar occurrence from Wired: http://www.wired.com/science/discoveries/news/2006/01/70040?currentPage=all
So, all that said... Even if Photoshelter's servers or datacenter went down, it's still up more than your internet connection to them :)
(Note: These stats ignore that Photoshelter uses geographically distributed datacenters, which put them at probably 99.99% uptime, which is incredibly good) |

->> I run several high traffic Web sites and sometimes get calls from customers stating they can't access a site. I'll be on the phone with them and browsing the site without a problem. I'll also check the server and it appears to be running fine. As Israel mentioned above, in these cases it's not the site that is down, it's the connection to the site from the customer's computer.
If you ping the server you are trying to reach see:
http://www.ehow.com/how_5157549_ping-server-name.html , this will help to determine if the problem is with your Interent connection or the Web site you are trying to reach. It's also helpful to have this information when you are on the phone with the site's customer support.
this may or may not have been the situation with Jon, but it's a handy tool to use when trying to determine why a site is inaccessible. |
