->> I am never sure if we rank above or below lawyers but now prosecutors are being offered the chance to work for free as well.

| ->> Gene when it's something that a person WANTS to do, money becomes less of an issue. Nothing shocking or surprising about lawyers willing to take a period of time off to pursue something that they really want to do. |

| ->> Eric, the first I heard about this program was on the radio yesterday and they were saying the prosecutor's offices are getting lots of kids just out of school who can't find real work and/or lawyers who have been laid off and can't find work and both are hoping that working for free will lead to paid work later. Sound familiar? This is not like a doctor or lawyer taking time off to do pro bono work out of civic duty or personal interest. |

->> Gene from the linked story......
3rd paragraph.. "And applicants are not fresh-faced interns. Hundreds of veteran attorneys have responded to applications with no compensation attached, giving up average starting salaries from $70,000 to $100,000."
6th paragraph.... “We get really good people” he said. “A lot of them leave paying jobs [to become fellows] because this is something they want to do — they want a career change or they want the trial experience.”
9th and 10th...However, he said the office tries to deter people simply looking for an in. Former fellows cannot apply for a job in the office within six months after finishing the program. “We didn’t want to encourage people to work here for free in the hopes of getting a permanent job if that wasn’t realistic,” Friedman said. “We didn’t want to take advantage of people who didn’t have a job.”
So while it MAY be true that they are getting 100's of applicants who are fresh from school or looking for an "in", it doesn't sound like they are looking to game the job pool. They're being very up front, no possibility of a job for at least 6 months AFTER the fellowship ends. They can't control what is in the applicants mindset and it seems that they have done everything possible to be upfront. Nowhere are they saying that this would lead to anything other than gaining new experiences.
Compare that to the "if you shoot this cover for $50 we may be able to get you your next cover at scale...." and you see that the mentalities are worlds apart. |

Personally I want to pay my bills... feed my kids and save for retirement. |
