->> I have a MacBook Pro and the logic board went out. I took it to the local Apple store and they asked if I had Apple Care. Well I've had the computer for almost two years and couldn't remember they tried looking it up and I didn't have a policy. They said thats OK and did the repair for free. It would have been $1000.00 to $1200 if I would have had to pay. Lucky me!!

->> I know somebody who's MBP is at the Apple Store awaiting a logic board. Unfortunately Apple Care doesn't cover instances where someone takes an Ambien after a night of drinking, resulting in one's mistakenly confusing an open laptop with a urinal in the dark of night. It should be interesting to see if they look the other way.

->> I just had my logic board go out on my old one and my Apple Care just expired a few months before. They sent it in for service and it only cost $330.

->> Interesting this thread came up as my MacBook, which is almost 3 years old now, has been getting kernel panic lately. I ran a disc check and it said was all okay, but if it happens again I shall be talking a trip to the apple store.

->> Rick, I had a similar experience a few months ago on a MBP I bought in Fall of 2007. There are numerous reports online about problems with video cards in those units (but others, too) frying the logic board. Anyway, it came as a huge relief to hear them say they'd fix it at no charge, even though I'd never had Apple Care.

->> Alan I've heard from a few friends there was a recall but I never heard anything. Guess they only fixed the ones that were brought in for repair.

->> There was never an official recall. However, if you have trouble with certain versions of the MBP they will run a test on the NVIDIA graphics processor. If the processors is bad then they replace it (and therefore the whole logic board) for free. It is a known issue with a particular NVIDA chip on the logic board.
If your computer passes the graphics test, but there is still a problem with the logic board then you have to pay. |

->> Speaking of AppleCare, have you guys looked into purchasing it over ebay? I've heard mixed reviews. I am hesitant just because it is sold for a significantly lower price than buying directly from Apple? This might not be a time to pinch pennies if it means no guarantee of coverage from Apple.

->> Buy from Apple. Since Apple is the company that backs the warranties I don't see how a third-party company can sell at a huge discount and still have Apple back it up.
I guess there is a chance you are getting an AppleCare package that someone bought and never registered and they are just trying to get some money back, but I would not pinch pennies because if it is not legitimate then you are out that money plus the full repair cost. And maybe Apple sells in bulk to people who resale but that doesn't strike me as Apple's business model.
And note, you can buy AppleCare no matter where you bought the computer/phone etc. Even if you buy at BestBuy, Wal-Mart or AT&T store, you still can get an AppleCare extended warranty. |

->> The AppleCare warranties on eBay are legit and Apple with repair it. Those people buy them in bulk and get heavy discounts, so they resell. I don't quite understand the business model, but a quick look on macrumors for 'ebay applecare' reveals that as long as you buy from someone with plenty of positive feedback, and buy it for the right product, you're fine.

->> It appears Applecare will not honor repairs for "seepage," and the cost to return a MBP in working order is $1247.
