New York City based Public Relations Company is seeking a photographer for a small photo shoot with a well known professional tennis player. Great way to add photos to your portfolio and work with a great company. Photos will be used in a marketing campaign geared towards the US Open.
Although there isn't financial compensation for this project, full credit is given as well as opportunity for future work with a magazine. We will work to create a great credit package for the right photographer!
Please email us for details ASAP, as this project would be taking place with-in the next few days.
Thank you. |

Wow ... I had this same type of "offer" from a local high school sports magazine here in the Atlanta area. And they tried to make it sound like it was the best deal ever ....
But I passed ... and I was very definite in how I passed !
But I also predict somebody will take that deal .... |

->> Ha, what exactly is a "great credit package?"
The sad part is I'm sure they had hundreds of eager responses. |

->> Where's "Idianapolis?"
I wonder if its near "Fushing Meadows" where the U.S. Open event takes place.
Whoever placed that craigslist add can't pay or spell. |

->> The "well known professional tennis player" would have to feel pretty great knowing that they think so much of him or her that they are trying to get a free photographer on Craig's List :)
I guess no Vanity Fair cover with Annie Leibovitz for that player! |

| ->> If anyone is interested in this gig please feel free to contact Blake Harvey of the Lawrence Blake marketing firm. His email is bharvey@lawrenceblake.com He's looking for someone to shoot tennis "star" (#91 in the world) Rajeev Ram for free so he can use the images in his start up magazine Raw House but give you FULL CREDIT. |

Mr. Harvey;
Let's see:
Nikon D3s Body $4999.
Nikon 28-70mm f2.8 $1199.
Elinchrom Light Set Up $2500.
Total $8398
So, just the basic equipment is over $8000... and you want to have the tennis shoot done for FREE?
One other question: Do YOU work for FREE?
Just wondering...

Blake Harvey is a start-up, I don't think he even realizes what he's doing might be considered "ethically challenged" in most circles. |

| ->> I like the honesty of this one actually. Instead of the SI double-truck carrot being thrown in front of you to entice you to work for nothing, here they just tell you up front you are volunteer/slave labor. I would rather know I am working for nothing, than find out later on that the photo that ran on ESPN.com netted me a whopping $1.85. |

->> Speaking of unpaid...
A friend of mine was temping at a multinational company here in town and was recently hired on. The company was going to hire a replacement for his previous position but they thought "Let's try an experiment. Let's see if anyone will do it for free part time."
And the experiment worked. They got over 100 applicants and hired three - UNPAID - part timers to take over his previous position.
This job didn't even offer credentials as a prize... Heck not even free nose bleed seats for a KC and the Sunshine Band cover band concert. So what compels people to apply for this trash? |

->> Just got this response from him after sending him a sarcastic email and him thinking I was actually interested:
This is a true shame. It would make sense if I weren't a start up company trying to provide the simple opportunity for an emerging photographer who would never have this opportunity on their own.
I did not mean in any way to disrespect anyone or their career, simply provide an opportunity that has very little budget in it's early stages.
I wish you the best in your career and will gladly assist you with anything in the future.
God Bless,
L. Blake Harvey

->> Jack,
I got exactly the same response. Okay, the guy has the start up blues.
Money is tight.
But here's the thing: FREE DOESN'T WORK. Not for us... and not for Mr. Harvey.
I may write him back and give him my 40 years worth of sales and marketing experience... for FREE.
Thomas, I believe your story. How totally sad. We're all connected - the financial crisis should have taught us that. Instead, we run experiments to see how we can exploit others.
Sigh....
