->> Maybe I'm just really dumb about these things, or really living in the past, but I'm confused about something.
I created a twitter account a while back, http://www.twitter.com/StartingGridRC and have sent out several "tweets" to learn how to use it.
What I don't understand, is how you get people to know you're there, so they'll get to maybe read what you write?
If I tweet something with 0 followers, 0 people get to read it. Therefore, there is no reason for anyone to to go to my page, as even if they might want to, they don't know it exists.
So, what is the way to get started with this? If I were to start following someone else's tweets, does this mean that person would start following mine?
I'm sure the answer is quite simple, but I "just don't get it yet". |

->> Michael,
Using hashtags is handy if you're talking about something specific - it helps your post show up when someone is searching for a specific term.
"Just done shooting the #Bengals vs. #Cowboys preseason game; my new #Canon #1DMkIV nailed all the action! #NFL #football"
Another way to become visible is, when talking about people in your tweets, use their twitter name preceeded with the @ symbol
"Just ran into @vincentlaforet in #NYC at @bhphotovideo; I'm kinda like a kid in a candystore in there :)"
One last tip: if you're wanting to link to an external webpage when posting a tweet, use a service such as http://bit.ly so you can track how many people are clicking on the links. |

->> I am having a hell of a time buying into twitter. There must be something to it though, there are currently 190 million accounts and 2 billion tweets per month, according to an article I just read. At some point, I think you need to forget the original purpose of twitter, "just got up", "going to the mall", that seemed outright ridiculous to anyone born before 1970; and start understanding how this thing can help you out with your business and or personal life.
The teens and 20 something's can easliy adapt because technology and rapid change are all they know. It's the 35+ person who is smart enough to make twitter benefit them, and anyone elso who still knows what a spark plug is.
Anyway, here is the link, it was a good read:

->> Martin, thanks - this is the first I've heard about "hashtags" and the "@" symbol. I read Mark's response, but last night when I tried to think of how to follow other people, I had no idea how to find them, unless I already knew their name.
Paul's post matches my thoughts - there must be something to it, but I'm way too old to "get it". To use his example, why should I care of hundreds of people might tell me something like they just got up? I still don't "get it", but I figure it's one of those things you've just got to try out, to understand what's going on.
Since I didn't find anything about hash tags, or much of anything else on the main page of twitter, is there a good web addy that explains these things?
(If my hobby was motorcycles, I gather I would somehow search for #motorcycles to find others who ride? And, I would type #motorcycle in my posts, to allow others to find me? In retrospect, I guess what I didn't "see" was how to use the search function.)
One other question, to further show how little I know. Suppose I did get 1,000 people interested in motorcycles to "follow" me, and let's say they posted three tweets every day. My math says I'm now going to have 3,000 messages each day to look through. Again, I don't "get it" - who has time to look through thousands of messages about what seems to be very unimportant stuff, to find a few that might be relevant? |

->> For you new to tweet'n, you can embed your stream on any webpage on your site or blog by using their widgets. Go here for more info - http://twitter.com/goodies.
We have our tweet @PhotoNewsWire on our main page (http://www.iphotonews.com) and for the time being on ever page in our photo gallery. Next week, I will be adding a twitter widget to the Photonews blog (http://www.iphotonews.blogspot.com)
We probably don't use twitter to its fullest potential but then again the market analysis doesn't support that it is heavily used by our target audience in our market. Facebook has a much better ROE (return on effort) in terms of posting information that is designed to motivate a response from our audience/fans/friends. |

->> I think everyone uses twitter in their own way and, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think there is a right or wrong way to use it.
I concentrate more on things I want to know about rather than getting followers. Following people, tweeting once in awhile and re-tweeting what others tweet will eventually get you followers. I follow people, businesses, newspapers, magazines, photographers, photo agencies, cycling, baseball, news organizations, sports teams, athletes, natural health practitioners, sports talk people, writers and generally anything/anyone that I'm interested in.
Sometimes when there is "breaking news" Twitter is the way I find out first about current events. I'm also surprised sometimes by who follows me. So, it's kind of like "if you build it, they will come." But the more people you follow, the less likely you are to catch every tweet. I only check it a few times a day and signed up for SMS notifications to my Droid on a select few.
Twitter is another one of those ever changing, learn/adapt as you go kind of things. Anyway, have fun with it.

->> "I am having a hell of a time buying into twitter. There must be something to it though,"
Paul,
It is all how you use it. I have set up Twitter strategies for more than one airline, including the largest airline in Europe. Twitter is not really about "What's Happening" it is about engaging, and often you get out what you put in.
There is a lot of random idle chatter, and even the best of users use idle chatter at times with those they are familiar, but it is also a place to search for 'hashtags' that will lead you to topics you want to follow. It will connect you in a somewhat real time stream of information for niche topics and news.
One person at Dell using Twitter made the company more than a million dollars in a year just by Tweeting sales. Twitter is a place many airlines and hotels host last minute specials, Twitter is a place to engage a brand and actually have them answer you back (sometimes).
Twitter can easily be broken down into many categories, these are usually the most common
1) Information stream
2) Collective streaming conversation
3) Direct interaction from entity to person, but 1 on 1
4) Excellent place for networking. Met my last three clients there
5) Info dump to test out new ideas
I just spent the last week creating a B2B B2B's-C Twitter strategy for the 3rd largest commercial airline manufacturer which turned Twitter into a whole new business & networking tool. You don't have to get it, but figuring out how to best exploit it for your needs can be beneficial. |

->> Michael,
If you talk about photography use the hashtag #Photo, sports #sports, college sports #NCAA, pro sports #MLB, #NFL, #NBA, #NHL for the world cup there were two widely used hash tags #WC2010 and #WorldCup.
Some people use #foto ... there is also #Nikon #Canon and other subspecialty hashtags. As you follow people you'll learn what they are.
Might I suggest using a free standing App like TweetDeck or a web based platform such as HootSuite to effectively use Twitter? With these you can view your three primary screens at once, which are "all friends" ; "mentions" ; "Direct Messages." Both of these platforms for Twitter allow for excellent search capabilities to set up streaming searches. |
