Putting cameras in to outer space...

I wish NBA, NFL and some other professional sports would let those of us that shoot stills and video for our papers websites use our 5D, 7D or other cameras. I understand about the whole TV contract thing, etc but in a perfect world it would be nice to give our viewers something different.
In the meantime as I wait for hell to freeze over on that.....I'm always trying to find ways to use video to tell sports stories (and obscure ones at that).
A few weeks ago I took a couple of GoPro cameras and mounted them on RC cars for a story, late last week I took 2 of them and launched them 97,000 feet into space where it is 60 below zero. Here is the link to my video ----->

University of Michigan students studying for degrees in aerospace launched a weather balloon 97,000 feet into space to conduct scientific experiments.
With temperatures at 60 below zero & violent jet streams to deal with the students had GPS units as part of their payloads to help in the tracking of the balloon after it popped and fell back to earth 90 minutes after the launch. Finding the balloon is another story.
The cameras weighing 5.9 ounces held up in the cold conditions and were fine when they either fell 800 feet from the sky on their 1st launch (which was a failure) to the 2nd launch and subsequent fall back to earth.
Trying to now think of another sports story to do with video and still holding out hope that someday I'll be able to mount a GoPro on the backboard of a Detroit Pistons or goalie cam for a Detroit Red Wings game :-)

Seriously, a really nice piece. You showed why I shouldn't be such a cynical old bastard. |

Sam, if you do want to kill Chuck let me know I'd love to come shoot it and do a cool video feature about it LOL!!
Thanks guys for checking it out! :-)
I was really nervous about the cameras at $300 each going up that high and getting "lost in space" or hitching a ride on the way down being caught on the wing of a 747 heading to LA.
The launch was cool but speeding down country roads in 4 chase cars tracking it on GPS was the best. Wish I could of included all of that more but didn't want the video to be over 4 minutes. |

You are the future, not unlike Orville & Wilbur.
The future is getting ever close to now. |

I've crashed and burned countless times (with video) like Orville & Wilbur did with their planes before they got it right and flew. I'm still trying to get it right but it sure is fun as hell trying to do just that.
I'm going to launch again with them to get it right, I know what I did wrong and learned my lesson.
I've have to put anti-fog strips in the waterproof case of the GoPro to prevent the fogging. I though it was condensation but some NASA guys emailed me that it is fog.

I think it's less about the bar however and more a case of seeing some really nice video story telling out there and using that work as a motivation to keep pushing to get better in everything from the visuals, the story arc, crisp audio and the edit.
I felt that way when I saw your Angola prison dad reunited with kids story last month. Very nice!!
There was no credit at the end of the video but I assumed it was yours because of the stills in the photo gallery. I wish a out reach program happened in Michigan prisons.
