If you could go anywhere, you have two weeks.

->> So i have a summer to do anything I like... One of the things I am planning on doing is driving from Duluth MN, to Seattle WA. Google maps says this will take 1 day and 2 hours.... I intend to take 9-12 days. Taking photos, car camping, and seeing things that I have never been to.
So sportshooter, as I drive west, where should I go? What should I visit and what rout should I take? (where should I sleep?) I would love to hear from you all about what you think worth seeing and shooting!
Keep in mind, I intend to try and keep to MN, ND, SD, MT, WY, ID, and WA states.
Thank you all! |

->> I don't know what time frame you're doing this trip in, but the PRCA Rodeo is in town for a week here in Sheridan, Wyoming through the 17th. I've only been here since mid-March, but I hear it's quite the show. Probably the best day to attend I imagine would be on Friday as they will have bed races as part of activities going on as well as the rodeo.
Other than that, if you're along the Montana/Wyoming border, you got to hit up Yellowstone National Park.
Any questions, just drop me a message.

->> You definitely need to hit up Glacier National Park in Northern Montana. Make sure you travel on the "Going to the Sun" Road when going from east Glacier to West. Beautiful!
You could hit the Theodore Roosevelt National Park "http://www.nps.gov/thro/index.htm" on the way.
Both very beautiful! |

I too would really suggest in the other part of Idaho to hit Yellowstone if you never have been there. Must see for everyone. |

->> If you're interested in wildlife, definitely Yellowstone... just get up early for it because things start slowing down in July as the park warms up. There's at least one previous thread in the board history with more YNP info.
For landscapes and more interesting hiking, the Tetons or Glacier. You could probably spent quality time in all three of these parks in two weeks.
OR, you could get out to Washington sooner and hit some of our parks. The wildflowers are probably out at Rainier right about now, and the vistas can get pretty spectacular at this time of year. If you want to get over to Olympic for a mix of coastal terrain and rainforest, it'll probably be quieter than the rest of the parks folks have mentioned (except for those in SD). |

->> Tettegouche State Park just North of Duluth is awesome (good rock climbing if you are into that).
You cannot skip Itasca State Park, the Headwaters of the Mississippi I was just there about a month ago (wife made me take a vacation), got some great pics with a pod and remote release.
You should also go and see the Paul & Babe in Bemidji. While your there just hang around Bemidji, I went there for college and I wish I could get back there more.
If you are coming more South on your trip visit the Cities. Always a great time. Plenty of parks and lakes to shoot at. You have the Mall of America to go shopping at (not that you really see anyone from the Cities there, unless they have to be). Also the new Target Field for Twins games, looks and feels amazing.
I hope some of these tips help on your MN part of the trip. |

->> Definitely Badlands if you are going through SD and if you want some unusual Americana check out the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD. http://www.cornpalace.org/
Little Bighorn Battlefield in Montana.
Since you are that close you might consider a detour through Glacier and up the spine of the Canadian Rockies through Banff (Lake Louise) and Jasper (more elk than you can imagine). Years ago I drove from Virginia to Alaska and back, and the highlight of the trip was Glacier to Jasper.
Happy travels! |

I've been all over the world, and still think this is the most beautiful place around. Rent a boat or kayak and just get lost in the wild. |

->> Isacc,
Depending on the route you take, The Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier are all can't miss spots. But an often missed national parks, and one of my favorite, is North Cascade National Park. Make sure to take state route 20 through it. Beautiful scenery and rugged mountains. There are campgrounds along this route. http://www.duaneburleson.com/washington.html
I'm jealous,

->> You mentioned overnight stays in your vehicle. I'm assuming you'll be doing this on the cheap. I'd check out KOA sites along the way. I'm not sure what a one night stay at campground costs these days, but many are loaded with amenities like free wifi, camp stores, plenty of facilities, etc. for brief overnight stays.
http://www.koa.com/where/usa.htm
For overnight stays that might only require bathroom usage, check out "Wal-Mart" overnight parking. Here's a directory of Wal-Marts that do not allow overnight parking.
http://www.walmartatlas.com/files/No_Park_Walmarts.pdf
Here's an interesting resource regarding roadtrips on the cheap in general:
http://www.roadtripamerica.com/travelplanning/Cheap-Road-Trips.htm
Here's a site that offers rest areas across the U.S. that you can enter as POI's in your GPS.
http://www.gps-data-team.com/poi/united_states/transportation/Rest_area-US....
Last but not least, you might find a fellow SS member willing to meet up with you on one of your shoots and have you as a guest on their couch, spare bedroom, or garage. :) Bradly has even offered a free beer. I find those meals and the company are the friendlist and most memorable on any trip.
Overall, be safe wherever you choose if you're going to stay overnight in a car. |
