More creative advertising

->> A corporate logo (not the manufacturer's) on the game ball, present in action photos of the game !!

Check out the gallery update by Theo Karanikos; a Ford logo fills a panel of the rugby ball.

Now the ethical question -- could this be removed if publications refuse to give free publicity to businesses?

->> Unintended advertisements have been a part of photojournalism for decades. Logos and trademarks appearing in the backgrounds of images, on uniforms of athletes and in just about any conceivable situation are just a part of life. From my standpoint, removing the logos from the ball would be unethical because the picture would no longer represent reality. That Ford logo could be a part of a story about sponsorship that kept a league or team afloat.

->> Altering the photo in that way IMO is deceptive to the reader.

Personally, I don't think that readers are going to go buy a Ford simply because they see it on the side of a Rugby ball.

->> Would the same publication remove the Wilson/Spaulding/Rawlings logo?

Would it remove the logo on the sidelines at basketball games? Would it remove the Reebok/adidas/Nike logo from shoes or jerseys?

It's the same deal.

->> I also don't see how it's any different from the actual logo ads on the uniforms of the players in the same photos...or, for comparison's sake, the 1382 logos on a NASCAR car or a driver's fire suit, (or look for an image of a European league hockey jersey).
