For those of you who have the G11 or S90...

->> what made you decide to buy the G11 over the S90, or the S90 over the G11?
Looking to buy one of these for another photographer and can't decide which one to get
I am not looking for specs or comparisons-just opinions from those who use either camera and why you bought that one over the other.
Thanks! |

the hotshoe is what sold me on the G11. |

| ->> When I was choosing between the S90 and G11 the hot shoe option won over the size option |

| ->> I have the G11 - the hotshoe was a factor but the G11 is more robust - major point for me. |

->> I got the s90 over the G11, mainly for its smaller size. The screen on the s90 is so bright that I've never had a problem viewing in in the brightest of days.
If I'm going to take the time to get a flash out to use it then I'm going to use my "big" camera with it. I'm using the s90 for all of the non-money making photos; facebook photos, family snapshots, friends goofing off, that kind of stuff. If you don't have the camera with you and are able get it out and use it quickly you can't get any of these shots. |

->> I sold my G10 and bought an S90 simply for size. I like the image quality as much as I did from the G10. The menu system and dials/buttons take a bit of getting used to, but I really like the ring for settings. The flash is anemic, even for a p&s.
Another advantage (at least to me)of the S90 is that lensmate makes an ultra slim 37mm filter holder that attaches to the front of the lens with double stick tape. It barely adds any width at all. I have both a CPL and a ND4 for mine.

The adapter for the G11 is a big tube that adds alot of size.

->> G11 - I liked the idea of the hot shoe as well. I have one of the little 270EX flashes that, although not a powerhouse, can still be bounced and fits in your pocket. And coupled with a short TTL cord the combo can work pretty well for it's size as you can get the flash off camera quick and easy and bounce your flash as you desire. It's certainly not a replacement for any DSLR these days but it does what I want it to.
I bought it so I would always have something with me that offered decent image quality and small form factor and for that it has been great. Shoots RAW, simple exposure compensation for Av and Tv shooting and the flexible viewfinder were also selling points. I don't know if the other cameras have those features, but I like them on the G11 |

->> Wait 60-90 days for the G12 to come out. Canon typically does its annual upgrade in September/October.
canonrumors.com reports it as:
G12
Backlit CMOS sensor
10mp again
HD Video
Minor ergonomic changes
At worst, waiting until the fall will put a lot of used G11s on eBay and here. |

| ->> Well, I have been using the G9, which is somewhat superior to the G10, but not sure if people would say it is better than the G11. I have used the G9 on assignments and it gives out huge files, raw too, and has a longer zoom than the G11. The video out of it is also quite usable. I also have the 270 flash and its power output can be set in the G9 menu, which is a very handy feature. The G9's can be had for a bit less money, but they do not have the twist-out LCD monitor, which is a nice feature, but for me not worth the upgrade. |

| ->> I'm the same as James...if I'm worried about needing flash power I wouldn't be using a P&S. I have my S90 and Nikon D90 with me on vacation (I bought the D90 just for vacation). I've used the S90 for most of the pictures due to the simple fact of its size. I've only had the S90 for a month, but I'm happy with it for basic family stuff. |

->> I sold my G7 and replaced with a S90. I had actually planned to go with the G11 but went with the smaller choice. It has all teh control I need, very good performance, and in a small package. I have a camera like this as my small alternative. For when I don't want to...or cant...take my full rig. Fits the bill perfectly for me. I've been quite impressed with the image quality as well.
