->> Normally I'd ask this question via e-mail, but I thought it might be helpful for other users. I bought this lens, a refurb from Nikon, and I'm getting soft images with the VR turned on at high shutter speeds using a monopod.
It didn't come with a manual.
Should I send it back to Nikon or are you supposed to shut off the VR? I've only used it a day or two. |

->> Are you getting the same results with the VR turned off? VR shouldn't cause problems with image softness. Your problem is either:
1. Bad AF with the lens
2. Bad AF with this specific lens in combination with your body (try the the fine tuning features on the body, if you have them)
3. When I first got the 200-400, it took me some time to hone my technique. I had AF-S lenses before, but the 200-400 seemed very sensitive and unforgiving, and my results weren't fantastic, until I had spent some time with it. Once I got it down, the results got much better.
Can you give us some more info? What body are you using it with? What settings? |

->> A D300. I'm not having any problems with other lenses. Funny thing is, the lens is in focus at slower shutter speeds with VR (up to a point, of course).
I haven't tested it with the VR on or off. |

| ->> Sorry, but why would you turned on VR at high shutter speeds? it's meant to prevent camera shakes at low shutter speeds, much like a virtual tripod. |

| ->> The switch was on, since I don't have the manual, I guess I didn't know any better... |

->> Thanks for the link, Scott. (And thanks to those that e-mailed me as well).
I tested it more. You definitely want to shut it off at high shutter speeds. It works really well at slow shutter speeds, though. |
