Hard drive recovery
Chuck Steenburgh, Photographer

->> OK, it has been awhile since I have faced hard drive failure without backup (this is a friend's drive, not mine) and I am wondering what data recovery tools are out there today.

Anything like ImageRescue for HDDs that can scan a drive after it has been re-initialized and re-formatted? Or can restore access without resorting to the former on a drive the system no longer recognizes?

I have used both for harddrive failures and been able to get my data back pretty easily

I have used disk warrior...think it is the best program around...saved a drive I had that was unrecoverable through several other methods...wouldn't mount ect...got back all of the data.

->> If the drive itself has actually failed, you'll need to go to a professional data recovery service like http://www.drivesaversdatarecovery.com/

->> Thanks Kyle...I'm running on a PC, although that sounds exactly what I need.

Rene, I'm going to give OnTrack a try...they have a trial edition, so I can see how this will work.

Mark - it's not totally dead, but Windows won't recognize the logical volume and wants to re-initialize/reformat the drive.

->> If the drive is connected via USB, I would also try another drive cable.

I have a couple of my 12 external drives that will only operate with certain cables.

The cables work fine on other drives, though.

My 2 cents.
