Editing Canon 7D Video

| ->> What programs do you use to edit video from the 7D? I used the trial versions of both Sony Vegas and Corel Video Studio and neither one seems to work very well. Vegas created a video that was jumpy and twitchy and when playing back in the editing window it was also jerky. Corel kept freezing up and crashing so I deleted both programs. I do not need anything very sophisticated, just something to do basic editing. I am using a pc with windows vista. Thanks |

->> Tom - The software might not be the issue. I cannot speak for Corel Video, but Vegas is a pretty solid program. You could also look into Windows Movie Maker (more basic) or Adobe Premiere. Your issue could be hardware problems.
Make sure that you are editing your video on a second drive either internal or an external firewire drive. Most software works best if the video files that you are editing is on a different hard drive on which the editing software is installed.
Also, it is possible that those programs do not like editing in the h.264 codec. I'm not sure what codec Vegas prefers, but, for example, Final Cut Pro does not like the h.264 codec. You'll have to look at the documentation to see what codecs the applications prefer. |

->> Keep with Sony Vegas. Until I got a Mac, that was my weapon of choice and it worked perfectly with 7D files (even on a c. 2007 Toshiba laptop)...
...but only after running them through this converter:

A bit steep for a converter at $130, but it works flawlessly. You really won't find a better option on the PC side, which it sounds like that's where you are?
I can't speak from experience, but you might check out the new CS5 Premiere. Read up on Philip Bloom's post about it here:

You might be able to bypass the conversion that way. Feel free to e-mail me for more tips. |

| ->> Another converter option is MPEG Streamclip (http://www.squared5.com), which many Mac users use in lieu of Compressor. It is free and there is a windows version as well. |

->> Tom, I can vouch for MPEG Streamclip. I don't know what the best codec is for use with Vegas (on Mac, ProRes is popular... does that work well with Windows?), but that's likely your problem: editing in the 7D's default H.264 is never a good idea unless you REALLY, really really REALLY know what you're doing. (no offense at all -- just saying)
Once you make your footage compatible with Vegas, you'll be all set! |
