How not to secure your strobes

| ->> That is easily the scariest thing I've seen in a LONG time. At least he used the pro, blue tape. Not the consumer, white stuff, right? |

->> To the untrained eye it may appear this is "painter tape" but in reality that is blue anti-gravity tape. Perfectly safe.

->> The photographer is obviously working for one of those agencies THAT DOESN'T PAY ENOUGH FOR THE PHOTOGRAPHER TO BUY GAFFER'S TAPE...
Much less a couple of Super Clamps... |

->> For the good of our profession, was there an attempt to contact this photographer and educate him/her as to why this is not the way to do things.
Heaven forbid something were to happen, it not only is bad for this photographer but all of us in general. |

| ->> I suspect that would fall on Kyle's shoulders. I don't think there's any practical way to drill down to find an unnamed photographer that worked an unnamed horse show in the Salem, Va. area on 6/24. |

| ->> Unfortunately I don't know who the photographer is...I have contacted the civic center and expressed to them how unsafe this set up is. I am calling back later today to follow up. Would hate to have something happen during the horse show tonight. The writer says there are $30,000-40,000 dollar horses jumping in this competition. Can't imagine the legal problems if one of them was injured by falling debris. |

| ->> Alien Bees are somewhat annoying in that there is really no place to put a safety cable. I ended up gluing some anti-theft plates (like you see on library computers) to create an attachment point. |

->> Lyle FYI: To safety cable my Alien Bees, I put a thick zip tie thru the adjustable clamp on the AB. Then I can attach my safety cable to that zip tie.
For the sport reflector, I bought some cheap hooks with rivets and mounted them to the sport reflector.
I then cut a plexiglass front for the sport reflector and attached that to the sport reflector with zip ties via small holes cut in the plexiglass and sport reflector (this keeps the glass from spraying all over if by some chance the flash tube breaks. |

->> Well, if something happens now the liability on the civic center just increased because a third opirty (Kyle) called and warned them.
This is becoming a race to see who is more ignorant... the shooter or the civic center. |

->> The slot that holds an umbrella on Alien Bees can be used for a safety cable.
Gluing an anti-theft plate? Seems like that could lead to problems over time as the glue gets older. |

| ->> Based on a just a quick look around the web, cable ties have a tensile strength of maybe 20-40 pounds. The adhesion strength of the security pad glue, according to the manufacturer: "exceeds 4,000 lbs per sq. inch." |

| ->> Lyle: My point wasn't to argue about which is better (glue or zip tie), but rather to address your point that AB's are 'annoying' in the fact there isn't a place to attach a safety cable. Either solution would work fine. |

->> Replacing the bolt for the tilt adjustment with an eyebolt provides a good attachment point. Get one longer than the OEM, put a regular nut, which will be used for tightening/loosening and then a nylon insert nut 1/4 in. further down the thread on the end for additional safety. The eye of the bolt provides an adequate lever for tightening.
I'm curious if all of the blue tape isn't just securing the various cables and wires - and that there indeed is a clamp and safety cables under there. |

->> Not sure if it's better or worse, but I found this at an arena I lit last year. There was no light on it but I assume that's what it was up there for. As far as I could tell the only thing holding it up was an old bungie cord strapped around it.
My light is in the background complete with a superclamp and proper safety cable.
