->> I'm preparing for one lecture I'll be giving at NPPA's Convergence and I would appreciate some help form you all.
I'll be talking specifically about the pros and cons of using a HD DSLR as compared to a "real" video camera for video journalism work. I know some of you out there have come up with some creative solutions. I also know that many of these rigs end up looking like a creation by Dr. Frankenstein himself and I wanna see 'em! I also want to see your video camera set-up's, so send those along too!
Would you be willing to send me an email with a photograph of your rig along with descriptions of items attached to it?
Also, tell me how much the items cost and what strengths/weaknesses you have found with your setup.

->> Garrett,
If you don't have any luck on the SS boards, the "Full Rigs" Forum on Cinema 5D would be a great bet to poach some photo examples from:

->> I don't yet have a video capable DSLR, but from time to time, when I want to include video, I've been known to carry a Canon 1D with 70-200, Canon 30D with 17-50 and a Sony HDR-SR12 video camera or Canon ZR800.
A couple of times, I used my wife's Canon SX20, which has 12mp and 720HD video (to see what it would be like to use either a 7D or 5DMKII) and will be upgrading to one or the other when finances permit.
There are times when covering a story with either video or still camera alone that I wish I had the other to compliment to final product.
There are times that video doesn't add much, and times that stills just don't get it done.
Having a camera that can do both (though video is limited in time) would be handy at times.
I don't have any pics of me carrying the three cameras, though (thank goodness.) |

->> Nikon D300s with a Sennheiser MKE-400 external mic.
Lens usually are a mix of my still stuff, which include a 10.5 fisheye, 16-35 f/4, 85 f/1.4
I have a Zoom H-2 recorder for other audio and use Audacity to edit (free and easy to use).
Using iMovie for now, but it is a fairly competent program for simple editing. |
