->> I'm looking at revising my lens lineup and wondering about the Nikon 200-400 f4. Saw the thread from April but was hoping for an update from those who are using this lens . . . are you still shooting with a 300 f2.8 and/or 400 f2.8, or are you relying more on the 200-400.
Any major concerns or issues with the lens (I keep hearing that it doesn't take TCs very well). If you have shots of it wide open on your member page, would you include a link to those images. |

->> Bert speaks nothing other than greatness of the lens and says it takes TC's well.
I personally like a 300 f/2.8 and 500 or 600 combo depending on what I'm shooting. Don't mind the weight, but that's me. Also I like the ability for 2.8, but I guess with the high ISO qualities, f/4 ain't bad. |

->> I don't shoot this lens, and rarely post here, but I have a question...or maybe just a comment.
The knock on the older 200-400 was that it's auto focus hunted in low light.
Unless that problem has been corrected with the newest version (and it may very well have been as I haven't read the reviews), then the best bodies won't help. Will they? |

->> PJ I've used the lens in both low light and at Gillette. In GOOD lighting like you get at a Gillette or a D1 school or in normal daylight the lens is super sharp and fast to focus. On a typical hs football field under the lights I still had to put it away and pull out a 300 2.8.
I won't sell my 2.8 but this lens is on the 'medium' range list of gear to consider.
Let me know if you want a few full res samples off a D3 at high-ish (3200) iso's wide open..... Also you can check with Mike Braca on the board. He has a 200-400 and covers plenty of hs and college fields with it. |

->> Primary long glass I used at the Vancouver Winter Olympics (covering ice hockey, figure skating, speedskating and short track) and the Beijing Summer Olympics (basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling and weightlifting).
Versatile. Sharp. Handholdable.
'Nuff Said.

->> I bought one of these used about two months ago. Sold a 400mm f2.8 to finance most of the purchase.
My rationale was simple: I no longer shoot the NFL in the Metrodome, and I still have a 300mm f2.8 for HS football fields. The low light baseball I've shot, it wasn't too bad, but I've only shoot in low light a couple of times.
Tremendous lens. Works fine with a 1.4 TC.I only shoot wide open with it; both soccer images on my SS.com page were shot with it and they are sharp. The one shot of the Heelan girl heading the ball in for the score is maybe 25% of the frame.
In order words, sharpness wide open isn't a issue with the lens. It's SHARP. |
