who switched main website to Photoshelter?
N. Scott Trimble, Photographer
Lake Oswego | OR | USA | Posted: 4:03 PM on 06.21.10
->> I am contemplating a switch from Sitewelder to Photoshelter after seeing a larger interest in my stock photos and changing the way my I am thinking I want my homepage to to show a little more of what I do in regards to video and interaction rather than sift through it. But, I am also mindful of the ease of being seen on smartphones/ipads and wondered who has made a jump to a dedicated Photoshelter website. Are you glad you did it? Are you using the templates or had a designer augment one? How easy was that? I really like Ami Vitale's site and how it implements more on the front page and thinking that route.

Thanks!

->> Hey Scott

I'm a big fan of Photoshelter although I wouldn't say my 'main' website is a Photoshelter site. I own several sites and I use photoshelter as a hub for my surf images with my brand 'saltycamera.com'. Although I am still in the process of adding my stock images, I have client images housed there from assignments (i.e. Mentawaisurfphotos.com). I use graph paper press for all of it. It looks great and is easy to implement.

I agree that Ami Vitale's site is well designed, and if I had known the issues with flash and iPhones/ipads, I would have gone that route rather than spending money with Livebooks. While I like my Livebooks site (davecollyer.com), I think going the Photoshelter route makes more sense.

Thats My 2cents...good luck!

Worth taking a look at what they offer...

->> I made the jump to a dedicated PhotoShelter website in late 2008, and have been pleased with the operation and ease of administration since then.

If I had more time, I'd explore some of the very powerful customization options; from what I understand, you can customize just about everything if you're willing to do some coding.

->> Photoshelter is the backbone for our company, Four Seam Images (www.fourseamimages.com). We have over 84,000 images in our archive and it works very well for us.

->> I use Photoshelter as my main main site, and just have my blog linked from there. I have been a customer for 3 years or so and have always been very pleased with the customer service. I work with a few magazines over seas so all I do is upload to a gallery, and they download whatever they files they want. Also, the web customization option for the templates makes it pretty nice too.

->> I have my site split into two, one youth/high school side and the other my editorial archive that PhotoShelter is a big part of. Still have my own page set up as the forefront (www.mikejanesimages.com) but 95% of the site is PhotoShelter - very easy for any clients that need to use it. Looking at the WordPress pages may change to that though - do wonder if it would work with Exposure Manager as well as PhotoShelter and mix the sites again.

->> Question about Ed Mulholland's site listed in this post.
The slide show on top of his website shows up fine in IE 8, while the slide show does not show up for me on Firefox 3.6.4.

As a point of reference, the slide show on Jack Gruber's website works fine in both IE and Firefox on my computer.

Is my computer missing an installation? Or is there a problem on Ed's site.

->> I switched late last year. Since moving to Baltimore in February and using the SEO tools, my site is now a top 5 for "baltimore sports photographer". The customization is fairly easy and you can do more complex or embedded objects with a little coding. I use galleries to publicly share work and lightboxes for clients usually.

Before I switched I would use the embedded galleries on my site. Still use them for my blog hosted by Blogger.

Even has 2 blank pages now to use.

->> I have a PhotoShelter site and a non-flash site and I have links back-and-forth between the two. I did this after reading an article that Google (and other search engines) may not see all the content of a flash-based site, and when you want a potential client to find you, well you take a couple extra steps to make it easier for that to happen.

There are enhancements you can do to a flash-based site to make it more easily searchable, See this article from Photoshelter for more on this topic:
