Copyright information and misinformation

->> I like Digital PhotoPro. I really do. BUT why would they publish such complete opposite information about copyright?

Promoting theft:

And doing what is responsible…teaching:
http://www.digitalphotopro.com/business/what-do-you-really-know-about-copyr...

I am confused and disappointed.

->> I was originally surprised to see the Misinformation article in DPP, considering that they had published a number of my articles, including the copyright article that you referenced.

Upon further contemplation, I realized that Misinformation article may serve a useful purpose, even if we might disagree with its thesis or arguments. From an intellectual standpoint, such an article should encourage each of us to consider his or her own beliefs, for it is only through reflection and challenge that we are able to refine and strengthen our beliefs. The article may also give us some insight into how other people think about a subject dear to our hearts, and this insight may give us some direction for dealing with those segments of the public that share the same views as the unnamed author of the Misinformation article.

If nothing else, the Misinformation article should remind us that one of the more challenging aspects of living in a free society is accepting that people have a right to express their opinions, even those opinions which we would spend a lifetime opposing. If you share a viewpoint that differs from the author of the Misinformation article, you might consider writing DPP to share your own viewpoint.

->> Thank you for posting your thoughts. I appreciate your insightful information here and in DP.

The Misinformation article comes across as tempering outright thievery and making it seem commonplace and acceptable. So, by presenting only one side of the issue, they fall short in publishing complete and relevant information. I'm sure there are many people who think it's alright to use any image they please on their blog, website or social site page and they will no doubt continue to think that unless taught otherwise.

I hope DP will consider cross referencing the two articles and explaining why contacting the photographer first might be mutually beneficial.

->> You know, I read the Misinformation differently than you did. I did not read it to encourage or condone theft of images, only to suggest that photographers look at the situation a bit differently and perhaps take some steps to at least mitigate some of the harm caused by theft. I did not find the article objectionable, although I can't say I found it to be of much value, either.
