Changing in-camera file names on 5D

->> I often shoot dueling 5D bodies. Just recently I came across an issue that got me doing some research with no luck. I am hoping that the SS community might have more insight.

The 5D outputs CR2 files that are named "_MG_####" by the camera. This number can range from 0001 to 9999. It will automatically reset at 9999 or you can manually reset it.

I recently shot a large number of images using the two bodies interchangeably. What I learned on ingest but did not know at the time was that the image serial numbers had overlapped so that I was shooting files with the same name.

This was caught at ingest and I managed a workaround, but was hoping to find some way to go into the camera itself and have maybe an "A" or a "B" appended to the file name to both differentiate the individual file name and let me track which body that frame came from.

I have had little luck with any of the Canon software - EOS utility, etc... So any suggestions? Or do I just need to be extra careful on ingest that I do not let an image from one body overwrite the file from the other? Thanks.

->> I don't think the 5D (or 5D Mark II) allow for changing the file names in camera. That feature is reserved for the 1D series bodies. I import files using Lightroom (or Adobe's Photo Downloader) and change the file name on import.

->> If you ingest with Photo Mechanic it will automatically rename the files with an A or whatever you choose. So _mg_7899 would become _mg_7899A.

At least thats how it has worked for me. Luckily with my Nikons I can change it internally for my multiple cameras. So I no longer run into that issue.

->> If you use Photo Mechanic, I ran into this issue and Kirk posted a solution for renaming on Ingest that uses Code Replacement to create any file name you'd like based on the serial number of the camera.

->> I use Lightroom and have a name created as they ingest instead of the in camera name, usually 20100616assignment0001.crw, or something similar. Any ingestor (sp?) should let you do that.

->> i think _mg_#### file name is for shooting in Adobe1998 color space. If you keep one body to shoot in that format, and switch the other one to sRGB (which you can change back to Adobe1998 in lightroom at the export) you should have your problem solved as files shot in sRGB are named IMG_####

Hope that helps..
