Microsoft Sharepoint for Online Archive?
Robert Boag, Student/Intern

->> I am researching new ways for our organization to collaborate, search, and utilize our photo archive from an online system. I have been looking at photoshelter but our IT guy has also recommended Microsoft sharepoint. I have been doing a little research on it, but cant really get my head around how it works. Does anyone use sharepoint? If so, what do you think about it?

Thanks
Robert

->> Sharepoint is a popular intranet portal for the corporate environment when you are sharing PowerPoints and Word documents.

It is not that friendly for photos - cumbersome to upload large quantities. Although the search features are pretty robust.

->> Saying Sharepoint isn't friendly to photos in an understatement. WSS (Windows Sharepoint Services) charges per seat, or per user. So your it guy will have to set that up. It doesn't handle exif data. You'll have to configure the upload limit from the default amount and even when you do that it times out quite often. MOSS (Microsoft Office Sharepoint Server) which is the big brother to WSS) does the same thing as WSS and alot more. I have over 10 years of WSS/MOSS consulting and I wouldn't suggest for a moment going with WSS over Photoshelter for purely hosting photos. Photoshelter has several permission options along with ip trace addressing. Unless you're needing the collaboration feature then I fail to see why one would go with sharepoint over Photoshelter, unless of course your IT needs job security (JK)

->> Thanks a bunch for this input. One thing we really need is the ability to search images using IPTC and Exif data from the web and if im reading correctly sharepoint is fairly miserable at this?

->> No not at all. Just out of the box it would be. See below. I just configured an out of the box WSS site with a picture library here

http://nmg2k.sharepointsite.net/ss/default.aspx

With some custom dev you would be able to extract the info you wanted and get it to display in any way you wanted, just not out of the box. It comes down to the resources you have to throw at the project. If you want to try to upload some photos send me an email and I'll provide you with a logon.

->> Robert,
Does you organization currently host their own internet server? If so, why the desire for a third party host?

->> Let me lay it all out to make it a little clearer. I currently work for a concert venue. The creative team consists of 5 graphic designers, a creative director, and the overall communications and marketing director. The current system we use is horrible for sharing and searching images. My proposal was to organize with lightroom, post online to photoshelter, with a multi-user account, to share and store images that way. Recently our IT guy proposed sharepoint as an alternative to photoshelter. While having an online backup of our images is a bonus what we really are looking for is a quick and easy way to share galleries across the foundation and the ability for our creative team to easily search and download files from anywhere. We do not have many IT resources and are on a limited budget. I know virtually nothing about sharepoint, so all of your feedback has been greatly appreciated. Hopefully this will help you understand what we are trying to accomplish

Thanks
Robert
