iphone data usage - unexplained AM transfers
Joseph Zimmerman, Photographer

->> With the new iphone coming out and changes to data plans I decided to investigate my data usage over a month's time. The good thing is I haven't gone over the 200MB limit so I might go down to that plan and save half my costs.

BUT!!

The reason I'm writing this thread is that there is some puzzling data transfers going on at 1 and 2 in the morning. This accounts for a lot of my data traffic. I've done a lot of searches and come to find out this has become a hot bed that NO ONE has a clear answer for. Not AT&T and not Apple. Some suggestions are tabs open in safari for websites that auto refresh (I'm guilty of not closing out tabs). Some say the apps are updating and calling home which is hog wash because they can't run in the background - yet. Another is push notifications but that would be odd that pushes only happen at that time of day and to lots of people who mostly like don't all have the same apps. Finally, some think it is AT&T tallying the days total and sending that in. Thats possible but lots of people have days with no use but have this am data on the bill and others have data usage show on the days report and still have the night data.

I thought I'd throw this out there in case anyone else was thinking of changing data plans to the lower level. Also note that while I'm below the 200mb level others reporting this issue are going over the limit just with this unexplained traffic. If anyone finds an absolute answer to this let me know.

One big thread on apple support site:

->> The data plans only apply to new customers for AT&T existing customers are grandfathered in on unlimited data from what I understand. But new AT&T customers might have to be mindful of what you are saying.

->> I was told by ATT the other day when asking about upgrading my iphone that I would have to pick a new data plan with my required new "two year contract" you have to sign to upgrade.

Maybe I'll call again and see if I get a different answer from someone else.

->> I've read about this on a couple of web sites and it's been a topic over at Macintouch. I read on one site that some apps (I don't have an iPhone and don't know which apps) automatically check for updates every night. I think you can turn this off in preferences. I can't find the web site that had this story.

There has also been a discussion about this on Macintouch. ATT is saying that it's an Apple issue and that the iPhones are sort of "phoning home" to see what's new. (seriously.) Here's a link to the Macintouch discussion:

->> William,

The understanding of reports so far is that if you have a current 3G or 3Gs iPhone and the unlimited plan you can keep it, even if you upgrade your phone (If you have an original Edge iPhone that may not hold).

However, if you feel you don't go over the data limits you can reduce your cost a bit by going with the $20 data plan opposed to the $30 unlimited plan. But once you go do the newer plans there is no switching back. So if you have an unlimited plan and drop down and then find you need unlimited, you can't get it back.

->> Just got off the phone with AT&T just to make sure, and like mentioned in prior posts, if you are currently using a 3G or 3Gs you can upgrade and keep the unlimited plan.

->> Does anyone know how much the iPhone 4 will be if you are only a year into your contract? My friend jailbroke his 3Gs last month and sold it on eBay for $520, but I doubt you can get that much now.

I keep my 3Gs on wifi when I am at home and should probably downgrade, but I don't want to risk never being able to go back to unlimited.
