->> I saw a FB post linking this story and saw the photo and went "Holy Cow what great access! Who shot this?" Since I made the last photo of Madoff as he was entering the prison I wondered how the heck access was granted.......until I saw the small print under the "photo".
Check it out....

->> Wow, I'm speechless...well, almost
How many people would even bother to read the small print? Even after reading it I'm left with all kind of questions...which is not good considering that an illustration or photo should be clarifying the story or adding another dimension to it. Instead it just confuses me and has me questioning what's real about the illustration and the story.
If they take liberties like that with the illustration might they be doing the same with the writing? |

->> WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG, WRONG!!!!!!
I am FAR from speechless, its just not words one should say in a business environment. I can't decide what's worse; this or the removing politicians from last month.
I'm leaning toward this; I would have thought that SOMEONE at the NYT would know better.
That image is a blatant bald faced LIE. |

| ->> I saw this and thought the same thing as The Chuck-Meister. This is a VERY slippery slope, indeed... And why is the cell door open? I will say that the photo-illustrator has a great name. I wonder if he knows Peter Max? |

->> I'm sure the brain-surgeons at New York magazine would argue that a properly labeled photo illustration is a time-honored tradition in the feature magazine world, and besides, they could not get photo access for the story ... or some such lame excuse like the "cover's aren't editorial content, they're advertising" excuse from the mags when they manipulate those photos.
It does indeed push over that slippery slope into a full-scale decline. thousands will think they're seeing actual photos of Madoff in jail ... many of them won't ever read the credit line. And then, when they do, they'll think "well, if the moon landing photos were fake, and now Madoff in jail is fake ... I can't believe any photo I ever see is anything but a fake." |

| ->> There was an episode on Star Trek Next Gen that "recreated" a version of events to suit the creator's vision of the event. This "recreation" was presented as evidence in a court of law. This is not far from that story plot. Life imitating art? |

| ->> I was taught that an illustration had to be overwhelming obvious that it wasn't reality on top of having the "photo illustration" in the byline. When I opened this link, I saw nothing to trigger that thought. The tag in the byline alone does not suffice. I'd say this has rolled a good way down that slippery slope. |

->> Wow a new low!!..and front the NYT that is supposed to be a benchmark for all..Reminds me of sleezy Dateline NBC or Entertainment Tonight "reenactment."
This kind of thing does NOT make me sorry I'm out the journalism business despite my degree. |

->> Just a point of clarification, the NYT and the NY Mag are different organizations.
Still, pretty lame though. I love the caption: "Any resemblance to Bernie Madoff is not coincidental." |
