Sure does look nice .... if Apple would extend the service to more than one carrier ... I think they would garner an even larger slice of the pie ... sure looks interesting from a technological/design point of view .... |

That was not my intention ... which is why I didn't specify any carrier designations .... just an observation .... |

Steven, I'm a non-traditional kind of guy. Would it be okay to make this a Nikon vs Microsoft thread? How about Verizon vs Chevy?

->> It's not about Verizon vs AT&T. It's about GSM (AT&T and T-Mobile) vs CDMA (Sprint and Verizon) and the current iPhone being GSM and not usable on the CDMA networks.
So the real question is, will the new iPhone work on CDMA or will there be a version that does? I don't think that has been answered yet. |

Anyone planing on starting new iphone service should definitely investigate the enterprise plans for a nice discount.

Not because they are bad, it's because there's no service in my subdivision... NONE!! That's why I moved to Verizon!! I lost 12K Rollover Minutes!!

->> Jim - it should be noted that those on the unlimited plan now can keep it. However, once you switch there's now going back.
I do agree that it's unfortunate there isn't an unlimited option offered to new customers. But I think it'll come back in the near future, especially if Verizon and/or other carriers get an iPhone.
Lisa - there's cases out there that make the phone look and feel like a brick. I just use one of those plastic, stick-on screen protectors then cover the phone with the cheap rubber case. |

The new iPhone certainly is sweet looking. The ability to multitask (finally) is a selling point that has kept me away for quite a while. |

| ->> The fact the AT&T is offering early upgrades to the new iPhone is a good indicator that a non-AT&T iPhone is likely in the very near future. It could be that AT&T's contract as the exclusive carrier for the iPhone is about to expire, so they're offering early upgrades to try to get as many current customers on new 2-year contracts as possible. |

->> Lisa, I'm a big fan of the Otterbox cases, several of us at the paper use them.
http://www.otterbox.com/iphone-cases/iphone-3g-3gs-cases/iphone-3g-3gs-defe.../
You're probably going to have to wait a while though for a case to fit the new version. iPhone 4 is a different size then the previous 3GS so it will most likely take the case manufacturers a month or so to ramp up production. |

->> AT&T has allowed customers to break their contract with every iPhone except the 3Gs.
First it was with the original iPhone.
Second you could break your contract and upgrade to the faster (more expensive) 3G network.
Then the 3Gs came out, nothing significant enough for AT&T to make money off of.
Now that the 4G is released, AT&T will let you out of your old unlimited data contract. Side note is that you must sign their new data limited contract.
Its a business and they have to come up with ways to increase their revenue. |

->> I think the iPhone usage pattern would kill any network the phone was attached to. The only positive from the perspective of network is that ATT has the best out there. If that phone had been contracted with VZW, TMO or Sprint, the networks would have been crushed much more so then ATT's has been.
My understanding from my brother who works at ATT is that the contract was or is shortly going to be re-upped, and I don't see any reason why Apple would stray from the exclusive they have in place, ATT has very much slowed all of their competitive smartphone rollouts so as to not antagonize Apple (where is the ATT Android phone?) , and exclusives make more money for the principals, and never forget, it's all about the money, not some notion of fair play, or competition, or fast data for the customer.
So don't hold your breath on that VZW iPhone. I hope I'm wrong because in SF ATT's network is dreadful, if that phone leaves it will be better for me. |

->> Gil-
The real growth is with multiple networks...not limiting the phone to a single network. I doubt Apple will sell 2x the number of phones since some (many) would switch to Verizon but having a single carrier was good initially but to maintain the growth (i.e. stock price) Apple will have to open up the phone to other carriers. |

I thought about this for a while. The best way to describe it is the difference between having a home phone and a cell phone. Yes, you already have the Internet at home and your office, but having it in your pocket is totally different. Any time you need to look something up, get directions, send/receive email, or goof off, you can. I'm not sure how I worked as a photographer without it.
I wouldn't argue that an android phone is any different than an iPhone, but I haven't lived with an android. Either way, I'm not likely to give up cell service for just a home phone. Neither am I likely to give up having the Internet in my pocket. |
