->> in the past I have used this function but tonight it is a shade of gray, not letting me click on it. Does anyone know why and how to get it to where I can click on it?

->> Hi Debra,
If the menu choice is grayed out it is usually because your battery is low. I'd swap out for a fully charged one (or charge the one you have) and then try it. It should work.

->> Yes, Joe is correct. Even if the battery power is at 3/4, it may be grayed out. A fresh 100% battery will solve that.

->> In my limited experience --- The internal camera battery must show a full charge on the battery level indicator on the camera must be powered by the AC adapter for the sensor cleaning fuction to be operational.

->> Yup, it's a safety feature on the D3; Nikon doesn't want the camera suddenly powering down and having the shutter & mirror close whilst you're still poking around with a cleaning wand - hence it not letting you set mirror lock-up on less than 80% charge.
