Recovering data from a physically damaged CF card

->> So, I've got a warped, cracked and generally beat up Sandisk CF card on my hands. I'd rather not go into describing the embarrassing freak occurrence that caused this mess, but let's just say that it looks like a dog chewed on it for a while (no, it was not actually chewed).

I cannot plug it in to see if the data is recoverable because the contact holes are ruined.

Is there any way to recover the data (if it's still there) from a card I can't even plug in anywhere? I don't know if Sandisk or a repair service can take physically damaged cards and access the files somehow.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. I tried a search of the archives, but there are too many "damaged card" threads related to basic data errors, rather than physically damaged cards.

Thanks,
Max

->> If the chip itself is not damaged, a data recovery service may be able to remove it and directly read the data in another device.

This site has a good explanation.

->> I have taken apart a CF card to make it work before. I took a knife and separated the two halfs of the card, this will reveal the chip inside, take it out. Then, since the pin holes are on the chip, i put the chip in a card reader that you have easy access to the pins and the card did not go all the way in (ie: SanDisk USB reader, not a Lexar FW that has a door) so you can make sure you line the pins up correctly.

It worked like a charm for me, but I was already counting the images as lost. If they are really important I would send it off.

->> Sorry, i just saw that the contact holes were ruined...what I said is irrelevant then.
