I've had some odd encounters with PR people but...

I sincerely hope Marc Slavin is no longer employed in a public relations, or community relations, capacity. |

| ->> Actually, I'd have to say that the PR guy was brilliant. Clearly, they didn't want to address the issue and they really didn't want to have the meeting. PR man almost brilliantly walked that line to cause a disruption that cancelled the meeting. His boss jumped on things just a bit too quick for it to have been an accident. Assault charges might be a good reward for the conduct, but frankly the perception of threat just isn't there, except for the camera that got smacked. |

It's simple. All they needed to do was say, "We are not going to talk to you."

->> Mark, that would be the obvious method. On more than one occasion I've been *handled* by PR types who would do anything to avoid a direct response or to respond in any fashion that could be recalled as contrary to management's stated position.
Somewhere, there is I would believe, a class, seminar, session, conclave, or such dealing with How to Deflect Attention While Appearing to be On Message. |

->> Sean,
From my understanding of the law, he could actually have been charged with assault AND battery. Assualt is the threat or intention to hit someone. Battery would have been where he actually laid his hands on the reporter after repeated requests not to be touched. I'm sure the video person could also have had a case.
And just watching that video made my heart rate go up. I'm not sure how I would have handled that situation. I hope I would have been as graceful and restrained as the reporter. |

Ah, the joys of different jurisdictions. I do believe you are totally correct, although I think a cop North of the 49th might well laugh. You are right about the reporter -- a model of grace and restraint. |

->> Steven,
Does WWCLD stand for, "What would Courtney Love Do?"
But on a more serious note, there are private courses for P.R. and media relations workers with titles like "media evasion" and "tactical media confrontation" which train media relations workers how to use close passive physical contact to actually cause their opposite counterpart to become emotionally uncomfortable and physically aggressive as a way of establishing situational control. |

->> I agree with Mr. Burges: Mr. Slavin, while majorly creepy, used a brilliant tactic to help the hospital skirt discussing a topic it clearly wished to avoid.
And for those of you who actually have to deal with this kind of situation in the field, Mr. Noyes' response was one you should emulate. Your first instinct might be to deck the PR monkey, but that would be playing right into his/her hands.
Keep your wits about you, restrain your temper, or end up making the touchy-feely guy look sympathetic.
Don't touch me, either,

Marc should be given the PR equivalent of an Oscar. And the "Obfuscator of the Year" award goes to. . . |
