Use to go to the F1 races on the streets of Detroit when I was a kid and have shot the race in Montreal a couple of times.
I hope it a good track with lots of passing opportunities and designed by someone else than Herman Tikla who seems to design every new track these days |

->> Read an article about Tilke's tracks today. Evidently, while he is very much responsible for the downfall of exciting racing, the blame also sits with FOM and the FIA. The FIA standards for F1 tracks are ridiculous these days. Hence why a track like Imola or Monza or Spa will never be built again.
So lets just hope its not singapore of valencia. The only thing Singapore has going for it is night time racing.
BTW, that is an awesome name. Well done. How'd you get your wife to let that one fly? |

->> Jay,
Where are they going to put it?
The only land big enough in Austin-proper has got to be some of the extra land at the airport since Mueller has already been developed.
Or is this going to be out of town a bit and just called being in Austin.
And Eric. If you and Ayrton go I'll help you out since that is my old stomping grounds. I think I've got to be there myself. |

->> George,
That's the million dollar question. Nobody gave any specifics about that yesterday. If I had to guess, and it's just a guess, maybe they'll put it near the airport where it's already loud. Or some place southeast of Austin that's not as developed. |

->> F1 isnt about throwing it in the backyard where no one wants to see it, Jay.
Its like having the World Cup and the Olympics all rolled into one weekend of motorsport. The eyes of the world are on Austin, so my guess is its going to be a street circuit or some kind that is centrally located in a high end district where F1 will feel at home. the Monaco of Austin perhaps? But certainly not out of town or near the airport.
And as for shooting F1, its the same as anything else...just a little louder :) |

->> Jamey,
This is going to be a little different. They are building a world-class track to host this event each year for ten years. They are not racing through the streets of Austin like they do in other cities. |

->> Yeah, I read that. But Singapore and Valencia were both tracks 'built' around streets in their respective cities. 1.5 years to hammer out a full track somewhere is...ummmmm..mildly ambitious, in my opinion.
I dont know. Just thinking out loud. But Id say it definitely wont be out in the boonies. If theyre going to do it in the USA, theyre going to have to do it right. Too much depends on this working for F1. |

->> I can't envision anywhere "in" Austin where a track with pits, stands and parking could be accommodated.
I hope it isn't a variation of the original track layout for the Texaco Houston Grand Prix in downtown HouTex, no speed and almost no passing, only the sounds and the smell. The later Astrodome track was only marginally better.
If Watkins Glen or Road America could be transplanted to Travis County it would be very cool.
If you build it, they will come. |

->> So excited!!!! I'm kind of confused about the location of the track - why they would choose that location. There was talk of having the race just outside New York for the last few weeks but it never came through.
I would love to see Formula One cars at Laguna Seca going through the corkscrew but the problem is that mainly thanks to His Bernieness Formula One is so about money now. I would assume it will be a Tilke designed course. He did do quite well with Turkey, and has gotten better recently. Don't believe me check out the Grand Prix on Sunday with the four-apex turn 8!
Hope he puts in an epic course in for this one - I know it's not going to be Spa, Suzuka, or Monza but I would really like a corner which just amazes people. (eg. Eau Rouge, Turn 8 at Turkey, 130R at Suzuka, or Paddock Hill Bend at Brands Hatch)
CAN'T WAIT UNTIL 2012!!!!!!!!!!
(by the way - anybody making the trip to Montreal in two weeks for the Canadian Grand Prix?) |

->> "The FIA standards for F1 tracks are ridiculous these days. Hence why a track like Imola or Monza or Spa will never be built again."
I agree... apparently when the FIA officials first visited the just completed F1 remodeling at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway they nixed the tire barriers because they were built with used tires. Not good enough. IMS had to replace them with stacks of brand new tires.
As for Austin, the more I read my gut tells me that this thing has a 50/50 chance of happening. For me the biggest red flag is that the promoter says they're going to do this thing with zero tax dollars. That's not how F1 GPs historically work. Usually there's no pretense of a GP being able to operate in the black. They are heavily subsidized by governmental units (national or provincial) under the theory that regional tourism revenues from the event will more than offset tax monies spent.
Tony George at IMS tried to make a "private" F1 GP fly and it monetarily flopped (and that was clear was before the Michelin debacle). The F1 promoters traditionally only gets to keep the gate (though not suite revenue), a share of the souvenir sales, and concession stand sales to offset a sanctioning fee that normally is in the 8-figure range. Bernie, Inc. gets everything else... TV, signage, hospitality, catering, etc. If George couldn't do it with the leverage he had over Bernie and the vast resources he had at this command, I'm trying to see how the Austin guys are going to make this work! |

->> Nic, the cars would literally get airborne off of the corkscrew. While interesting to see, I would rather not see another Ferrari parked in the tire barrier.
And as for being off topic, yeah it is to about 3/4 of the people on this website. Id love to do a poll around here to see who could actually tell the difference of an IRL car and an F1 car. My guess would be that not many would know or care what the difference is. |

->> Oh and PS, I WAS going to Montreal, until I decided to have a change of life and Im now moving to the UK in July to chase some personal dreams of mine.
That said, Ill be heading to Monza this year. It was a toss up between Spa and Monza, but Im a Ferrari fan, and I want to experience a weekend at the famous track. It will be like going home :) |

| ->> The Austin American-Statesman reports that the site has been chosen for the new track. There will be a press conference later this morning. The track will be built on 900 acres in the community of Elroy, which is about 10 miles southeast of downtown Austin, near the airport. Here's the article and photos: http://bit.ly/bTsWfi |
