When is it ethical to crop?
Bob Nichols, Photographer

->> With the recent uproar about the Photoshop job by the Dominion Post, I got to thinking about when IS it OK to crop out part of the photo? I mean, there has to be a time when the end justifies the means, isn't there?

These before and after images kinda illustrate my point.

->> I get that you're trying to start a discussion, and maybe a good one will come out of this, but I gotta say -- it's a no brainer for me. And, to be honest, it always surprises me when it comes up on the message board or elsewhere, since I feel like there's little room for debate ... but then I gotta remind myself that a lot of folks on here aren't journalists.

Anyway, for me, it's simple: if your intent is to alter the truth or deceive the viewer in any way, shape or form (be that cropping, toning, deleting, etc.) then it's wrong. In fact, odds are, if you have to ask yourself if it's right or wrong ... it's probably wrong.

And that photo is ridiculous, by the way.

"Do not mislead." The rest is commentary.
Now go forth and shoot.
