| ->> I am attending the Summit Series Sports Photography workshop at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs on June 27- July 2. There are 4 SS members who will be instructors there as well...Dave Black,Joey Terrill,Mark Terrill, and Mark Reis. I was wondering if anyone has attended this workshop(your thoughts on it), what I can expect from attending,things that would be helpful to know before going,and any tips,suggestions,or advice to get the maximum benefits from this workshop? Thanks in advance for any info. |

| ->> Do a little research on any type of sporting events that might be taking place around there. The workshop tries and usually does a good job about having things lined up to shoot, but knowing about a couple more options might be an advantage. Take advantage of Nikon and all the exotic glass that may be available to borrow. |

->> dan, be prepared to hit the ground running and for the demands of several intense days that start early and end late. i'd encourage you to arrive a day early to get the lay of the land, especially if you think you might want, as tom suggests, to shoot outside of the curriculum -- many events take place at venues outside of the campus. create lists: gear you would like to try, goals you want to achieve, skills you want to acquire or master, people you'd like to meet. refer to the lists often. find out ahead of time if there are people there as athletes or coaches who hail from your community. and have fun!
ps: this fairly recent thread addresses your question as well...

->> Nina,
Excellent points.
Dan,
Knowing what you want to get out of it going in helps a lot. Here is another thread that should answer a lot of your questions.http://www.sportsshooter.com/message_display.html?tid=18913
Also, if you have any interest in lighting at all, don't miss by brother's classes. He's forgotten more about photography than I will ever know.
Looking forward to meeting you.

->> Dan,
You will have a blast attending any of Rich's workshops.
Rich has some great programs that gets you shoulder to shoulder with some of the best shooters and photo editors in the world.
Tom, Nina and Mark all have great points to get that much more out of any Summit Series. Make sure you follow their advise and the results you will receive will pay you back in the long run.
Plus make sure you get hooked up with Jody from Roberts Camera and use some of that great lighting gear you have always dreamed of using. Then there is Ron from Nikon Professional Services that is a great resource of knowledge and gear too.
Just plan on very little sleep and having loads of fun. You will be bummed that you have to go back to Texas.
Have a blast and hope to see some of your images from the workshop on your SS site.

->> Dan,
I attended a number of years ago and found the experience to be well worth the investment. It was more about the contact with the instructors and the feedback from them and the class members than it was necessarily about what we shot. Certainly, you will be given an opportunity to shoot sports that you might not get to do very often, but the technical pointers that come from the experience are what count. What was especially beneficial for me was the contact that I have had with the instructors since the course, most notably Mark Terril, with whom I enjoyed working the Eagles Patriots Super Bowl and Damian Strohmeyer, who at this point I would also call a friend. These people and the others helped to improve my shooting skills and have been there when I have had questions. I have recommended the program to a student with whom I worked with at Boston U, who will also be attending this year and I look forward to hearing about her experience. Enjoy!!

->> Dan-
I was an instructor there for several years, and it's a great workshop. Rich is a class act, and he always has support from lots of really nice people.
The main thing you need to keep in mind, is that it is very open workshop, schedule-wise. No one will tell you to go shoot this at 10am, this at 11am, etc....you are free to make your own schedule outside of the classroom times. You should have some goals, do some research before you go, and figure out exactly what you want to get out of it.
Definitely prepare a portfolio and some specific questions for the instructors, because you'll have plenty of social time to talk photography.
Enjoy! |

->> Dan,
This was a pivotal workshop for me many years ago.
I attended workshops by both Robert Seale and Joey Terrill. While I know Mark is being far too modest about his skills, I left Colorado with a passion for lighting that burns HOT today because of what I learned from Robert and Joey. Take ANYTHING JOEY and ROBERT teach (except Robert's not going to be there.. :( ? ) Even better, when I had a question 2 months ago about another image that Robert had made, a simple email got a answer within a hour.
In fact, I asked my wife yesterday if there was any way I could free up my schedule and go this year. That's less promising; but IF you want to learn, and it's more than just Sports Photography (which is there in great quantity), if you want to learn about how to control and master light, then this is time VERY well spent.
